we need help!!

me and alex, (fenix) both have the same problemo, basically as we've both explained in the past, our cars are hesitating when accelerating and not pulling as they should, a few people have suggested crank position sensor, but we both can't find it?? please can somone post some pics up of where it is, its near the fly wheel but thats not helping us! sorry if we sound stupid but not having much luck, cheers people....

Kai - thanks, will remove the oil filter and see if that helps.

Moffmeister - there are plenty of topics with similar problems - there is not one solution out there. Both Jake and I are having problems, I don't think we and everyone else here would get an air leak at the same time - however we did think about it thanks

The CPS seems to have fixed it for a few people when changing sparks/leads and ignition packs has not.

i had it on mine was a mapping issue, has yours been re-mapped at all? does it happens when its cold warm wet etc?

I have asked the previous owner what engine work/mods he had done to the car. I did wonder if it was because of the cold - but it's usually as and when. Not sure about Jake's but when I lost power/stalled when idle I couldn't always turn the car on again first time. I swapped fuel relays and now if I do lose power and stall, I can start the car again no problems.

Jake has upgraded his air filter but apart from that I'm not aware of any engine mods.

we think its the lambda sensor, as this controlls amount of fuel going into the injectors etc and we reckon the tesco fuel has messed them up so this is prob the problem. we've had two mechanics say this is the most likley cause. so we'll try that out and go from there....

Little bit more info - I went and filled up at Esso with unleaded 95 - same as what I use but not from Tesco. My car still runs fine sometimes then horribly the next minute. I was heading into town - rush hour - put my foot down to get over a roundabout and the car cut out. I didn't have the dashlight dim so no change to put my foot on the accellerator to keep it alive. I was then unable to start my car for a few minutes. I thought this problem of not starting first time had been fixed when I swapped fuel relays. Anyway, on the way home this happened again. I was stranded in a layby for 30mins randomly trying to start my car. It would turn over, but not fire. I was right next to a chinese takeaway and tanning parlour - so spent most of the time resisting the urge to grab some munch and then get some sunbedding time (the missus was with me). Anyway, called the AA and they said they'll be there soon - randomly tried the engine after 10mins and away I went. Apologised profusely to the AA as I managed to move my car..so reckon I'll have to wait atleast an hour before they send anyone next time!!

Today I should be getting a new lambda sensor and fitting it, aswell as fitting the crank position sensor if the lambda sensor doesn't help. Testing the fuel pump as well, just because

Changed the lambda sensor today - already just starting the car up it runs much smoother. I pushed both window controls to close the windows (already closed) and the revs dropped to 750/800rpm whereas before it dropped to about 300rpm and it boosted itself back up again almost instantly!

I'll run the car over the weekend and see if it's fixed my problem and if so I'll start a new topic on replacing the sensor

Jake - were you running tesco 95 or 99? Have never heard of Tesco fuel messing up lambda sensors before.

Yeah the Tesco thing was a while back, but they still get 'bad' batches - my boss filled the Merc up and it ran really lumpy..so I dunno

well i've had the probplem for ages so it makes sense, i think it'll def be working well when i get mine changed over as well. the two mechanics i've spoke to , who are both mates of mine, siad the fuel did ruin the lambda sensors so i trust them, and fenix's car is running better so looks like we have cracked it, just need to get the job done on mine this week some time.

The car is running better, however I lost power as usual when sitting at traffic lights. The night before it stuttered under accelleration once and I think I heard a pop - backfire? So crank position sensor will go in but I might change the fuel filter first.

Interestingly I died after chucking a tenner of fuel in at Esso. Being a busy petrol station, after failing to get the engine to fire I looked under the bonnet to pretend I knew what I was doing - thus bying myself some more time and not getting people irate thinking I put diesel in my petrol car or something.

For some reason I decided to check my spark plugs and pushed on the metal cover/cone thingies on the leads. The far left one clicked as I pushed it down. So it was sitting higher than the rest. Oddly, the car started straight away. Would this explain the backfire?

It ran much better today I have to say, but it's always the way with an intermittant(sp) problem.

could be that the lead wasnt making full contact thus making a weak spark, does it splutter and jerk under load? if so i had a simlar problem on my old valver turned out to be the coolent temp sensor! Try and get sombody with vag-com to scan it!

have you looked for a bad earth yet, i had a simaler prob stalling, realy strugling ecelleration, no power etc. turned out when i had my car serviced they disconected my battery for some reason and didnt tighten it back up?? worth a look
