changing or cleaning

Hi, i need some new brake pads on the front of my car, first up is the a guide anywhere on how to do it? an second, the've got abit of a lip on em, im a machinist so would it be ok to turn them off? or grind them off? or should i just leave em? any advice is much appreciated Dan i...
