polisher or buffer

Thinking of purchasing a polisher for the car. never been a fan of these as was told can leave bad swirl marks on the car. But after seeing the ex use one on hers, they look like a handy device. Dont get me wrong, i dont mind polishing by hand, but seeing how much better these things remove...
