1.6 TDI Fault - Any Suggestions?

On the M62 this morning and the bloody thing lost power in the middle lane at 70mph. Pulled onto the shoulder and rolled down it at 30 checking for weird noises and warning lights but nothing. Did it again twice more so parked up and called Seat Assist. The AA man came, couldn't find anything wrong with it. Took him out for a spin and he saw what was happening, but still, no idea. Car is laid up at the dealer now, Corsa SRI from Enterprise for a few days but no idea what's wrong with it.

Seems reluctant to rev beyond 2000 but otherwise drives OK. It's not in limp mode or anything. Has this happened to anybody else?

Sounds like a turbo problem.. That's a guess tho. And if it's a 1.6 tdi it's pretty new to have problems with it.

Hope you get it all sorted soon

Cheers. It's not DPF, do too many miles at high speed for that, and the light's not on.

Turbo's kicking in as normal, no whine or lag. I'm wondering if it's supermarket fuel?

Sounds like limp mode, which should only kick in if the car throws a fault code?

Which supermarket? I know Morrison's have 7% bio-diesel which is too much for the common rail engine, but other than that

Filled from empty with Asda fuel on Friday, though have used Morrisons before. Is Morrisons diesel a bad idea? Wasn't in limp mode, it was just rough.

Got it back already. Software glitch. DPF wasn't regenerating. Much quieter, seems more economical and it's much faster. I don't know if the new map has done all these wonderful things or if it's the DPF being regenerated. If you've got a 1.6 TDI get the latest software just in case.

Sorry, the two weren't meant to appear connected. I Googled Asda diesel and loads of people blame it for the shitty running of their car, and if Google says it it must be true.

And again...

On the A1 today, same thing happened, only it got worse. AA came out and said he'd follow us to the dealer as it still had some power. On the way there the engine kept cutting out, as I was on single track roads by this point I kept re-starting it to try and move it somewhere where it wasn't blocking the road. After about 5 minutes and 10 re-starts it died completely. It's chugging when I turn the key but not firing up. Once again, the AA man was baffled. Warning lights did come on this time - glow plugs, battery and alternator. AA checked the alternator and said it was fine. SEAT Assist agreed to a 7 car hire this time (standard is 3 days for an Ibiza). So, once again, it's laid up at a dealer, this time much worse (in that it won't start at all) and still no idea at all what's causing it.

Will have to wait to see what this dealer (KOOOOPERS of St Albans) can find. Tempted by a Leon 1.4 TSI they had in, but from what I've read, those can be shitehawks as well.

Also, the previous diagnosis (DPF regen / software fault) was complete cobblers. So up yours Jay See Tee Six Hundred Menston.

Fekking heck, Sergio! I feel your pain mate!

At least there is now a fault that can't simply be explained away by a software update and a DPF regen! I hope they nail the problem this time...

My personal view is that if you are considering jumping to another car, the I.4TSI seems a bit of a mixed bag. You could end up with a good one and be very happy, or you could just end up in another world of pain!

I know I'm biased, but if you like the Ibiza, what about a FR TDI? They seem to be reliable from most accounts. I've certainly had no issues so far. Fuel consumption is not dissimilar from the 1.6 TDI and has more power. Also the 1.2TSI seems OK now once teething issues from the first engines were ironed out. Power output the same as your current car (but it's faster) fuel consumption not bad either. Best of all no DPF to worry about!

I hope you get things sorted soon whatever you decide to do! :)

Should have got an FR to start with, though I know of a few faults with them. I'd happily take an 1.9 TDI 130 if they still did them, at least they were old enough to have had the faults ironed out (and more economical).

Hopefully KOOOPERs will sort it, though they seem like more of a family runs sales operation, regret not taking it to a bigger outfit who are more likely to have seen this before.

SEAT Assist are great. Bought it used (though from a franchise), suprised they're as accommodating as they are with people who didn't buy new.
