1.8 20v Non Turbo Performance gains?

Hey all,

Months on from my previous questions I've still done nout. However, I'll be coming in to some money later this year - not a lot, but enough to play with - and I'm wondering what you all think on the topic of performance upgrades for my 02 1.8 20v Non-Turbo Tolly.

I recently spoke to the fella's at AMDTechnik who were very informative and said they could do a re-map for £300 that would add around 17-20BHP. Now, this doesn't see all that bad, but I'd like some other options too if possible. I've had a look around for information on other possible upgrades, but almost all seemed geared for the Turbo version of my engine; and I'm wondering whether that's still applicable.

As always, any help much appreciated.

Few hundred quid, let's say 500 to put a figure on it. My tecnical knowledge isn't amazing so we'll need to budget fitting if it's anything too complicated for the average Joe with a fitting guide can do.

I'd have to say the remap figures for a non-turbo are excellent.......maybe a little optimistic even

The only other option is an exhaust and induction kit around £500 to get the car breathing better.

Double your budget would buy NOS with a progressive injection system, 25bhp / 50bhp or 100bhp jets depending on your taste / need

Thanks Rudd. So with the Remap... can you take a guess at what kind of performance gains I'd see on the Tolly's 0-60? As far as I know currently it's at 10.6s.

Also, what kind of BHP and Toque gains can be had for a nice induction system?

You would be far better off selling your Toledo and buying a V5 version. If your modding your 1.8 the insurance / running costs wouldn't be anyless than running a V5, and with the V5 you would have a far nicer car in the first place [B)]

You will be spending alot of money on your 1.8 20v to get realively small gains compared with tuning petrol or diesel turbo engines. Don't forget you will need to uprate the brakes and suspension aswell to cope with the extra gains.

Just buy a V5, you can get the later 170 bhp version now for approx 2K, I should know I just bought a minter for this price:clap:

I think with all these mods we are talking 5 or 10bhp max (exhaust)
Induction kit a couple of BHP

0-60 improvement  probably more to do with driver ability, launching without wheel spinning too much etc

I think Colin C has a point, to get a major improvement you could be better off changing for a 1.8T or V5 model......not least because as soon a s you start to modify the car the insurance would shoot up too

If you had £1k to spend and fancied NOS then a 50bhp Shot with a progressive injection stsem (see JBS site) would certainly put a smile on your face

Ok guys thanks for the advice. Plenty food for thought. I'll let you know what I decide to do.

i have a remap on a 1.8 20v, got an extra 10bhp (you would be really lucky to get any more out of it to be honest looking at the rolling road figures with a panel filter), but your torque is the best increase of around 30ftlb which on a stand still start makes a hughe difference.
