Well my 2.0 TDI Sport is in for its 30k service and I've got a 170 FR as a courtesy car. It's a nice car certainly, but if I'm honest I'm not seeing a *massive* increase in performance... In a way I'm glad because I had a horrible feeling I'd drive the 170 then decide my 140 was dog slow when I got it back. Having driven them side by side I certainly don't think the FR is worth the hike in price/tax/insurance and drop in mpg.

Of course it's possible my 140 is pulling more than 140. Weren't there stories of some of the 140s reading upwards of 150 on the rolling road?

Definitely was stories and it doesnt surprise me - mine (140) feels quite nippy. But I've Never driven the 170, just the 1.8T 180bhp MK1

Could it be due to where you've driven your temporary 170 car? I mean if you've used A roads and the 170 shows its extra horses in the higher gears, perhaps more attuned to Motorways, then it may be less noticeable? Or has it got few miles on the 170 whereas at 30k your car is just about broken in!

Near Reevo :)
Having driven both quite often the only real difference is initial engine power say from 1500 to 2,300 , then again from 3,800 to 4,200

apart from that the 140 is a really good engine ... to be fair.

Yeah just got my 140 back and it's definitely a good compromise... near-FR performance without the higher running costs.

I wish it had FR alloys though. I love the FR alloys... :(

I couldn't get a 118D (140bhp) out of my boot this morning on the A1.

When I was deciding what car to buy, I test drove the Golf sport 140.. it definately was a more 'refined' engine imo. But it was obvious that the 170 had that little bit more kick.

Having had an Altea 140 for two years and clocking over 45k in it and then having a Leon 170 FR for nine months and doing 18K i have had a reasonable experience of both and the FR was definitely worth the extra. Altea was probably slightly heavier so that accounts for a bit but overall definitely better with 170. Friend of mine has just changed from 140 octavia to 170 Vrs also high mileage driver and he also rates the more powerful engine as being noticable:D

My previous car was a Mk5 Golf GT TDi 140 (now being driven by the missus), and I have noticed quite a difference in performance from my FR TDi 170, and the wife has noticed it too when I let her drive.

I would say the 170 is much smoother in power delivery and if you do want to floor it, you get a much quicker boost than the 140. 170 fuel economy is a lot worse than the 140 though.

I was very close to buying a 118d instead of the Leon as the 140bhp one does a combined of almost 70 mpg and is in the £35 a year tax bracket. It was just too small though and even though it was more cash the standard spec wasnt bad at all.

BMW's styling might not be to everyones taste but they can make damn good engines.

D...B... I might be interested in the 17" alloys as the wife finds the ride on the 18's a bit too harsh while she has got one in the oven.....

Where did you get your remap, strensall? I see you're relatively near me... How much did it set you back? I keep toying with the idea... although I also get paranoid about over-stressing the turbo et al...

You got an FR as a courtesy car my garage give boggo Ibizas!!!!

I've gone from a 150bhp Golf Diesel and really notice the difference in power, and my Leon goes round corners unlike the Golf!!!!

Indeed I can imagine you'd notice the difference between the PD150 and the PD170. The PD150 pretty much takes the faithful old 1.9 to its limits, and the 2.0 is hellishly more torquey than the 1.9...
