Hi everyone,

I got this vehicle from a SEAT dealership and it was the last car sold before they went bust.

I've been having various issues with it which have resulted in the managment systems, relays, etc being replaced under warrenty.

The first thing I noticed was a burning smell at the back driver side (right) wheel and hot break disc.

The first garage I took it to (Basingstoke UK) said I must have parked it in deep water (I live on a hill) and that water was in a connector. They cleaned out the connector. But fault was still there.

I then went back (following an AA van after the faulty break shut down everything on the motorway) and they said the issue was the break disc warping. I did point out last time that the burning smell would be bearing grease and the disc would be damaged.... Only the disc was replaced. Also the electric cooling fans were intemittently running despite the temp never going over 90 - or even reaching 90 sometimes.

The burning continued so I envoked SEAT Warrenty and told them I wanted to go to a different service place.

Now I'm at one in Reading. They have replaced a damaged relay at the wheel, the engine managment system, and the door control system as the child lock button failed. During this time the cooling fans were still running for long times. The garage told me the fans and burning smell at the rear wheel are due to the diesel exhaust system doing a 'purge' - even though it was this smell that alerted me to a break issue in the same are....

Also after I got home I opened the bonnet to fill screen wash only to find a cover missing from the air intake system - it's being fitted tomorrow - and they asked if I wanted to know what the price would be....

So.... can anyone tell me more of this "purge" where the exhaust system is heated up to remove deposits and how often should it do it?

kind regards
Steve

Sounds like a DPF regeneration.

Thanks hilly81.

That's an interesting read. I've never had any warning light come on but that could explain what's happening.

I'll keep it on monitor.

Kind regards
Steve

I dont think you will see a warning light unless there is a problem and I understand if there are problems it can be £££££'s so hopefully you wont see the light!!;)

Passive regeneration will happen without you knowing it. Active regeneration will put the dpf warning light on and force you to drive it until it goes off. The cooling fans run on when you switch it off to keep underbonnet temps down.
Surely the warranty is nationwide, so you can take it to any seat dealer?

i know when my 2012 alhambra is burning the DPF soot as it increases the revs to around the 1000 mark, never had a light come on or burning smells. i cant see your issue being DPF

Dpf?

I didn't think the new Alhambra's had DPF's as such? Don't they use the adblue system instead?

Now I'm really confused!

With the rear seats up on the left hand/nearside in the boot there should be a little door. Behind that is the top of the adblue tank.

Mate of mine has a 140 SE ecomotive and it has it. What Car mentions it on the 140 (2012) engines as well in the reviews section (I have too few posts to add a link).

I thought they switched over in 2011 so perhaps you have a 'late registered' car or an early engine?

Gerico1000, My mistake!!! after 28 months of ownership i have now found out i do have adblue!! BUT there is a DPF fitted as well!!

I was never made aware when i bought the car it had adblue, i have never seen a bottle indicator with the ignition on,(unless you only see it when its running low?) only the exhaust symbol for DPF.

Having had a Leon 170FR in the past i was aware of the DPF and seeing the same symbol on the Alhambra dash i just assumed it was the same set up.

Has your friend topped up yet? If so what sort of mileage did he get before needing to do so?

Phew! I was wondering if I found a quirk in the different engines/specs! Anyway, hope that's helped.

He is a bit of a cautious type and tops it up at service intervals or before long trips abroad. He has a stash of bottles, I think they are 5 litre but by his own admission he has no idea how much is actually in the tank!

You have to be very careful with stuff as it is very, very corrosive. Another friend of mine runs a garage and is happy to fill it up mine cost plus a few quid whenever the light comes on.

I have a 177 DSG (14 plate) that is coming up on 12,000 (no mention of it at 10,000 mile oil change) and I haven't seen any light yet (tempting fate now). I'd say about 70% of my trips are long distance/motorway so my consumption should be less. I've not seen a DPF light but then I'd be surprised if it needed any sort of regeneration with the trips I do.

Spoke to my local Seat dealer today and they say the higher the annual mileage the more frequent the adblue top up will be needed (i thought it would be the other way around?)...!? IF adblue is needed the driver information panel (center screen of dash) will inform driver, no indication light will be displayed on dash like handbrake light etc when ignition on.
Cost of top up £35 at my local Seat dealership, also no adblue pump replacements have been done(according to service manager) only a relay replacement to stop top up light activation even after adblue top up.

Anybody told different from there Seat dealer?

Likewise, I figured higher annual mileage would use less adblue although I guess it depends on how it's done. Lots of cruising at steady revs will be reasonably economical.

My local dealer, Lakeside in Essex quoted me £105 for an adblue top up when I first enquired about the car. I didn't buy the car from them and I have no intention of using them either. Westerham just off the M25 (junction 6) have done the servicing so far and been very good.

I do nip in to Europe from time to time and I've wondered about just toping up at a pump? I'll report back if I get brave enough......

Will do.

I think I must be getting close but when I start up I don't get any warnings so I just think "Not today then"!
