2nd Gear

Hi again!
Duno if anyone else has the same issues but wen changing from 1st gear to second gear i can get a crunching sound. I have my foot fully on the clutch and just as the gear engages it makes a small crunch. It doesnt happen all the time and mainly happens wen i first start driving it! jus doesnt sound too healthy n dont want to do any damage to it.

sounds like the brass syncro ring on its way out, is it a 16v per chance?

no its an 8v 1.4 s

I had what you describe in my 95 GTi. apparently its the syncromesh is worn (typical problem on the vag boxes) it will hold for a bit but best to get it looked at, which is a box out job i'm afraid

I replaced my box a year ago, its fine now

wot u replaced the whole gear box?? can you not jus replace the mesh bit? how much am i looking at to get sum1 to look at it? buying a haynes manual today so will look to see how many spanners it gives for taking the box out!! removed the gear box and replaced my dads clutch on his toyota mr2 so i assume it will be as dificult as that!!

you could probably pick up a new gearbag for less than 50 quid (well, not new) and would save on rebuild costs.

as Brendy has said, get yourself a low milage 2nd hand box for alot less than it will cost you to pay for the synchro mesh to be replaced on your current one.

085 is the gearbix code for the 1.4 Ibiza. Mk4 Polo's were also fitted with the same box, just check the ratios.....

does the pedal feel ok ? not started going kinda soft ?

i had same problem at start and realised it was the dreaded pedal box that simply didnt pull the cable full length

only started 1st to 2nd at first then as it got worse 3rd was a bitch to get in etc

If you can hang on til xmas you can have (yes have) a fully functioning low mileage box from my vario (same ratio's as the 1.4)

only abused for 6k, was looked after for the 44k before that.

blah blah, collection only (but in all seriousness it's all OK)

the pedal seems fine. not soft. quite hard if anything.

oh one more thing u reckon if i took it in for a service (which it is due for) they wud diagnose the problem?

nothing 'too' bad - just I always knew it had a finite life... the clutch has bought the farm though - only way to get 75bhp 'going'

Been quoted a mere £75 for installing a gear box and clutch as long as i get the parts! quite chuffed with that! where the best place to get reconditioned/new or 2nd hand gear boxes?
