After Respray

Hi mate,

When I come back from holiday my mk2 ibiza will be getting a re-spray.....just standard colour.

The paintwork is in a sorry state at the moment......not helped by the poor quality spray OE from Seat and i've had the car since i started to drive...... :crash:

Just looking for a bit of advice really on what i should do to protect the new paint......although it will be much tougher than the Seat mince....

Never had a car sprayed and have heard that it has to set/cure etc....

I want to keep the car for a long time.....and over the time improve engines etc.....So i want to keep it looking its best for as long as possible...

Any advice you have would be a great help.

Car goes in to get checked etc to see what needs done before a spray on saturday.....

Cheers mate ;)

New paint should be left for approx 6 weeks. Wash only using mild shampoos. See my post on how to wash a car for the process for this.

With regards to care, use a wax only. No polish, and certainly nothing with any abrasives! If you buy from the likes of Halfords buy Megs Deep Crystal step 3.

If you use the internet, have agnders at www.motorgeek.co.uk
anything wax only with no cleaners will be good.

hope this helps

My understanding of this was the other way round. Don't use any wax's or sealers, as this stops the solvents from being released from the fresh paint, therfore slowing down the cure time.
Paint that has been baked in an oven shouldn't need as long.

I am very willing to be corrected though :)

A couple of extracts from a thread on DW regarding a freshly painted car.

"The concern is more applying wax too early rather than light polishing, the paint will be softer than normal and will polish easier. Its important not to wax for approx 1-2 months as the paint will not yet be fully cured.
NB this doesn't apply to factory paintwork where its baked at high temps"

"New paintwork from a bodyshop as a rule of the thumb from PPG should not be sealed for 30-90 days to allow the paint to properly cure. If sealed it can prevent the paint breathing and ends up damaging the clear.
Try some #80 this was specially designed for newly sprayed panels."

As mentioned you need to bin the sponge and chamouis leather and get a lambs wool mit and lots of microfibres. You'll have a perfect swirl and scratch free canvas to work with so once clean get the paint sealed and protected with a quality wax.

Thats exactly my concerns, I want to ensure the paint stays looking like its just been sprayed....

The guys that are doing it are known for their good work, so I shouldn't have any thin paint worries.....

just keeping it clean and protected...

So wax and seal or not??

Been reading your threads with interest

On the topic of resprays I've just picked my LCR up today after having various panels done after scratches etc incurred over time. Not an all over respray though

In the interests of not recking the new paint am I ok to use Meguirs (sp?) next generation car wash from Halfrauds? Does this count as a soft shampoo mentioned above? If not, can you recommend one as I'd now like to keep it in good nick?

I should point out I'm not into detailing at all but want to do the best with normal car washing tools. I might wax it though...

Any advice appreciated

Cheers
