Air con problem I think

Hey guys, seeing as it was a warm day today I thought I would put the air con on, car is a 59 FL FR tdi but it didn't seem to blow very cold at all, had fans on full and temp set to lo.

When I turned air con on or off there wasn't much change in temp if any.

Is there anything I can check / look for? How can I tell if the compressor is engaging etc

Anyone had this before?

Common failure on the Mk2 is the air con pressure switch. If that has failed the compressor won't engage anyway. Is your external temp sensor showing the correct-ish temperature? Ours went haywire and it affects the air con.

You mean the temp on the MFD? Yeah that seems fine.

Right so pressure switch, can this be changed without a garage visit? Where a outs is it?

Thanks for the help

You will want to check the obvious the condensor isn't leaking the air con system wont engage if it detects no pressure in the system so either pressure switch is faulty or it's correct and there is no pressure in the system.

the compressor it's self could of failed also but this is less likely.

I would book the car in to have the AC system leak tested and a quick plug in to check for fault codes.

Sorry, had pressure switch done under warranty. Pretty sure you need a regas after its changed.

A re gass isn't a problem as I bought a groupon yesterday for a re gass and anti bac clean from ATS place.

Right time to find a new pressure switch as a first stop then a leak test.

Where abouts is the pressure switch located?

Right I've just had a bit of a mooch under the bonnet and looking at the compressor there is a bolt in the middle of the pulley that looks to screw into the black flywheel looking thing, that bolt is not screwed in all the way I'm sure of it. I don't know if it's supposed to look like that but to me when you can see the thread of the bolt it's not screwed in properly.

Hi matt can you get a picture at all I know not easy with the location but if the pulley is loose and not driving the compressor that would cause your air con not to work.

Lol well that doesn't look right, I'd strongly suggest tightening that properly. if it's already tight dont force it buy a new bolt. and try that first may have cross threaded the bolt which is why it's sticking out like that.

I had the same issue with the previous work Passat (62 plate) . The gas leaks out from around that bolt. You can try tightening it , best of luck. VW are aware of the issue, and as my motor was out of warranty at 75k ( although only 2 years old) were prepared to make a 'contribution' which basically meant my company was still left with a £600 bill.....
Which extracts the urine somewhat when a new compressor can be obtained on t'internet for less than £200.....

Thanks for this, I take it your bolt wouldn't tighten up?

The car has got 11 days left of the warranty when I bought it from a dealer so here's hoping they pay up to sort it

Tbh I didnt try it. The car had gone in for Peasant damage and needed new air con rad ( amongst other bits) which was why I thought the air con wasn't working. After they replaced all the peasant splattered bits , I got the car back with a 'its all fixed Sir' response ( £3k worth, reckon it was an ostrich not a fkn pheasant :censored: ) about an hour later they got it ack with an 'oh no it isn't' look. Cue techhy looking worried, consulting notes & computer, followed by ( pretty darnn fit ) receptionist tottering over to give me the 'news' . Was well hacked off tbh, more so as I had to go to Scotland in a 1.4dsg Golf..... [:@] :wtf:
