Alhambra...no reverse gear??

I recently bought a 1998 Alhambra 1.9TDi with no reverse gear.I'm hoping for a "quick fix" but knowing my luck it will be a box off or replacement box scenario.
Anyway can anyone shed any light on this problem or had similar symptoms?
All 5 forward gears select as they should do but when trying to select reverse it just will not go into the "gate".It moves across ok but it's solid when trying to bring it back down to select reverse.
The box is a DBW code one.....and do any other gear boxes fit from the VAG range...just in case i need a replacement?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi,
Not sure what the problem could be, but do no that all earlier alhambra's, sharan,s pre 2001 use the ford gearbox.

had few problems with them, on top of the gerbox the selector mechanism unbolts and lifts out, on the main shaft there should be a 10mm head bolt with an m8 thread you might find that the bolt has snapped off you might be able to get the remains of the bolt out from the drain bung or it might be a strip down job. might be the problem or might not, had it twice in about 5 years.
