I bridge Code and +UB (code may be named differently so it is the one above +UB) when powering up externally, but I do not suggest bridging any of your car wiring as it is already in the loom!

It does only have one power supply in the loom so to speak, the ignition switching is done via the CANbus hence why an OEM or direct for VAG HU has this protocol integrated.
You should only need an external supply if you are fitting any old generic stereo as this doesn't talk to the CANbus.

Picked up a 12v supply from the fuse box by the OBD plug, seems top row are battery (perm 12v) supply bottom row are switched (ignition) I fitted it into the "missing" wiring hole in the quad lock, the head unit now works fine, switches on and off with the key and all seems well. now all that's left is a DAB/FM/AM roof aerial and the aerial splitter on the back of the RNS 315. Over to you, who's done and and what are the part numbers please. :D

I was almost a breaking point, having compared the factory fitted unit with the RNS 315 wiring diagram I realised the standard (factory fit) unit doesn't need the additional 12v supply and therefor isn't on the wiring harness!! the moral here is they 'aint always plug an play. Still need help with the aerial and aerial cable splitter tho??

hi Mungomole, I have now fitted the A-Sure head unit to my 2012 freetrack. The only downside is that the unit does not switch on with the ignition (this was mentioned in their ebay advert) and I am unable to switch off the speed warning on my half display computer or use the USB connection under the arm rest. I did a VCDS scan but it will not recognise the the new unit in canbus. Other than that everything is working including the rear view camera, rear monitor, blue tooth telephone and full steering wheel controls. overall I am pleased with the igo primo maps 2.0 which include radar, digital speedo, speed limits with free updates. The audio and visual are very good with connecting point for usb, ipod, sd cards and much more. If I could turn it on with the ign and get my on board computer to work properly I would be more than happy. Also, the fact that the ross-tech cannot find the unit is worrying but is it essential? aggie

VCDS won't communicate with an aftermarket HU.
Did it come with a CAN interface box? It probably needs a switched live taken from the fusebox

Hi skard nice to hear from you. Yes it came with the canbus interface and all the steering wheel controls work ok. The problem with the speed warning was not the fault of the after market unit and I have rectified it with VCDS. I have also found that the radio loses stations occasionally but this has been cured by an aerial booster. Also, I have downloaded the radar alerts off pocketgpsworld and they work of with the igo primo navigation system which is not as good as tom tom but I am told that the unit runs WinCE6 which is compatible with tom tom so I might look into that. The reversing camera works ok as with the DVD/CD, USB and Ipod connections and it is a perfect fit into the dashboard and really looks the bees knees. So, all to be done is the switched connection to the unit but I am not sure how to do this so I will switch on by hand for the time being unless somebody can give me a plan of action. Whether the lack of communication with VCDS wil be a problem I don't know as everything is working. All the best aggie

VCDS is not supposed to communicate with aftermarket stereo's, so don't worry about that. If you look above (post by 170xl) it seems that something has changed in the wiring of newer Altea's, basically you need to take a feed from a switched live and it'll all go on and off with the ignition.

Igo is actually very good once you get used to it.

I will also play the sceptic here and say it could be the first of the weird occurences you get with these types of stereo, sorry to say, as this should all be done through the CAN interface it comes with.

Hope you get it sussed.

Hi Skard, I am nearly there now with this installation. The only thing outstanding now is that the replacement number plate light with LED and integral camera is showing a bulb out light on the dash. I saw on this forum somewhere that an inline resistor needs to be fitted what I need to no is what value I need? Also how to back up the map card as I cannot seem to copy it. If you or anybody else can help me I would be obliged. Cheers aggie

If you disable 'cold diagnosis of number plate lights' in your BCM module with VCDS it should stop monitoring the plate light.

I am not sure why you get an error, it must have a non CANBUS compatible light LED. What you could do is buy a matching colour CANBUS bulb for the other side, it may even out.

When I had the Altea I had an independent camera situated in the middle between the lights, I had a similar camera to what you have in my old Golf and found them to be problematic.

If you have a removable card, take it to your computer and copy/paste all the contents to a new folder

It is very good indeed, tomtom is brilliant but getting over the initial change it is quite a useful program.

Hi All,
Reviving an old post again.

I have a similar problem like 170xl. I installed a seat rns315 on to my 06 Toledo. Now the unit wont power up :(. It seems there is a missing 12v feed in the wiring harness. Any suggestion where to get the feed from? Also Is UB+ switched 12v? if so the + should be permanent?

I had previously fitted a parrot and simply ran a new feed from the fuse box, can't remember if it was a spare or piggybacked off of something else, so when it cane to fitting the newer head unit I reused that link, fused of course. Easy enough. Just a though, I fitted an after market head unit to an 2002 TT for a friend, again same problem with power supply, he found additional leads from connects or a similar company, he sent them an e-mail and they supplied what he needed!

Good Morning. RNS315 is now up & running. that little mod helps the unit turn on. GPS, FM/am Radio, CD works perfectly. Yet to fit the DAB antenna & Bluetooth mic.

But for now I am happy:D, its miles better the the factory fitted unit.

recommended anyone have a Toledo MK3:).

I haven't updated any CAN-Gateway yet.

According to Ross-tech I should be in the safe from battery drain issue!
My gateway info -

I have just fitted a ebay satnav dvd to my freetrack and it is excellent. I also have a rear view camera. I was able to get the surround from my local seat dealer and it matches the rest of the freetrack dash perfectly.it also conects to the rear screen to show a dvd whilst the head unit shows the satnav screen. I willpost some pics when I can
Interested to see some pics if poss? What rear camera did you get? Thanks

Hi,

Just about to go down this road myself and fit a RNS315 and wondered why the CAN-GW update is needed?

Does anyone have any pics to share?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Fitted the unit a few days and all was great until last night when my alarm went off at 2am. At the time I didn't know what had triggered it, however this was pretty obvious when I tried to use the car this morning and the battery was flat  So I can only assume I have the CANBUS GW issue, can anyone give me any advice as to what I need to do to resolve this issue. My Altea is a 56 plate, so guessing it has one of the early versions of the CANBUS.

As a side-thought, can I just remove the CANBUS connections from the FAKRA plug so that they aren't connected to the head unit or is this just going to cause more problems? I understand this would stop the steering wheel controls to stop working but they don't control the replacement head-unit anyway, so nothing lost...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated so that I can refit the unit and finally get away from the factory CD player.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

CAN connection is more than just control for the steering control. It also turns the unit on and off with the ignition, it adds input from the ecu to assist with gps reckoning (like when you're in a tunnel it reads steering angle and speed sensors so that it keeps an average position until gps is viable again). and all sorts of other stuff.

A CAN gateway isn't expensive to buy or hard to change, so needs doing properly.

Thanks Viking. Is there a simple answer as to which gateway I need to upgrade to? I'm assuming the dealer will not want to get involved in this if I call them for part numbers etc
