Ariel removal

Quick question for anyone out there - I unscrewed my old ariel and have noticed it is fastened on a hinge type thingy !!!

How do you disconnect this? I felt like I was about to buckle the roof of the car while pulling at it?

It's not designed to be removed, it has a captured nut to keep it attached. You are supposed to loosen the arial, fold it flat and then tighten it again whilst it is flat against the roof.

I just removed mine on tuesday. I tried to pull it out like you did and it wouldn't budge. Apparently the dealer has a tool to take it out and they should do it for free. But I got them to remove it and he just yanked it out! he was practically standing on my back bumper. So my advice is let them do it incase you pull the whole thing off then they have to fix it for free! I've got my new small one on now looks loads better! hop this helps

Just gave my aerial a firm tug and it disconnected.

Unfortunately i found that the S2000 aerial i'd purchased for ebay wouldn't fit! The thread appeared two short (wouldn't even start to take)

I think I have two options - cut away some of the plastic at the base of the aerial or get a different one! :-(

I have just done this. Unscrew it fold it flat, hold the base and the base of the aerial in separate hands. Lots of short pulls and dosn't require a huge amount of force. I think there is a washer type thing on the end because there is no thread on the last 5mm or sojust a flared end. Stand at the side of the car and you can get closer too it as well. Not as hard as I thought it was going to be.

It has an anti-theft "ball" on the end, it will come out, just a big tug required.

Its the same as the Mk1 leon - do a search in that forum and you'll see exactly the same conversations as in this one

It stays attached to the aerial, but it deforms enough for the aerial to be removed. It's just a flared out section on the end of the thread.

What ever it is it is left in the base. I think it is a washer/ nut of sorts so shouldn't rattle. If it does a squirt of spray glue through the hole should hold it in place.
Forget that Mark E sounds like he has hit it on the head.

Aerial removal

After removing mine I also attempted to fit an Enfig Stubby aerial (similar to the Honda one) only to find that the threads were too short. It fitted perfectly on my sons Mk4 Golf so I visited a local breakers and got an aerial base from a Mk4 Golf for £2. I then replaced the Seat base with the VW one .......... totally interchangeable and a five min. job .............problem solved. If you open the tailgate you can ease the roof lining down at the back and get at the underside of the base. The base is held in place by one big nut and there is a push fit type connector in the actual lead. The Golf base will have a compatible lead attached to it so it's just a plug out, plug in job. You will notice that the aerial no longer folds flat as the Golf base does not have that facility.

I had the same problem, I also ended up cutting the plastic at the base. Be careful, if you cut too much you will uncover the metal aerial and it will then fall out as it isn't glued in.

This happened to me, so I heated the plastic up with a heat gun, applied copious amounts of hot glue, inserted the aerial back in the black sheath and then waited for it to cool down...

Just fitted mine and it looks great, fits perfectly. Old aerial was a b1tch to remove though.

Car now seems to handle better and there's much more oomph low down LOL

i fancy one of those new audi fin arials, they look smart. even better if body coloured. but i guess that would mean removing the whole arial unit
