Afternoon all. As you may know, I've been having trouble starting my pd170 of late, particularly first thing, or when it's been sitting for a while. I thought it would be something like glow plugs, starter motor or alternator, as I'd replaced the battery in January, I discounted that being the cause of the problem.

Took it to a mechanic friend to have a look at it today. He scanned it for faults (pic attached) nothing obvious presented itself. He then connected the battery to a meter. It showed a constant 0.3 of an amp being drawn from the battery. This was with absolutely everything switched off, we even waited for the mfd to kill itself. He started methodically pulling the fuses while I watched the meter, nothing changed. It was the same when we pulled the fuses from the box in the engine bay, nothing changed the meter. When we disconnected the lead from the battery to the engine fuse box, the current dropped.

This is where he started scratching his head. No one fuse in that box altered the meter, but the entire box did, if that makes sense? He then unscrewed the box (torx bolt right in the middle of it) and the current dropped again on the meter.

He's totally stumped, and before we go to a costly vw electrician, has anybody on here had a similar problem? Something is draining the battery, but we can't figure out exactly what. We know all the usual suspect parts (battery, alternator, starter etc) are OK, and we can't narrow it down to any one fuse, so what else could it be?

Pic of fault codes, although I doubt they're relevant. It did throw up an intermittent engine speed sensor fault, but he reckoned that was down to it not turning over at the right speed when I've been trying to start it. The airbag warning has been cleared as well.

As always, any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated, apologies if I haven't explained it properly here!

Hi mate, I had an issue recently with my car a while back (Audi S3) where I had a constant drain just as you say, took every fuse out and it still remained the same, in the end it turned out to be the alternator that was at fault, once I had changed it, the car ran fine after that.

Hope that is of some help and you get the issue sorted.

Firstly 0.3 of an amp is completely normal, some things will require power once the car has powered down.

nilz has also brought a valid point to the table. The alternator has a component on it called a diode pack. A diode is an electrical element that prevents the back flow of current. If the diode pack begins to fail it allows the back flow of the battery's current and gradually flattens it. When the engine bay fuse box is disconnected the circuit for the alternator is broken hence the complete current drop.

MJ it was the diode pack that went on mine, couldnt think what it was called, basically the battery would charge whilst driving, but then when the car was off it would sort of reverse charge/drain and when you try and start up the next morning
the car would be dead.

Right, cheers for the replies guys. Before I go chucking money at an alternator, there's Defo nothing else it could be? Bloody thing is totally dead tonight. And the cursed airbag warning has came back!

How much of a pain is it to fit an alternator, diy job, or should I rope in my mechanic friend again?

One last question, any idea the alternator part number?

Can the diode pack be replaced separately? Is it different to the regulator? Saw a video (couldn't tell if the guy was polish or Irish) where he replaced the regulator and reckons that 95% of alternator issues are caused by it.

Apologies for all the questions, and thanks again for any help anyone can give!

It doesnt look like its too bad a job on the Leon, if in doubt, obviously get a mechanic to help. Im not sure you can replace the diode pack on its own, you can however get a refurb alternator in exchange for your one.

Maybe worth having a look locally to see if there are any places that do alternators/starter motors etc, they maybe able to do a check for you.

Thanks again mate. I've had 3 folk (2of them mechanics) recommend a place near me that refurbs alternators. They've quoted me £110, that includes them removing the alternator, refurbishing it and putting it back on. That sound like a decent enough price? Its getting done tomorrow, I'll let you know how I get on.

Thats a good price actually, I had one done on an Astra recently, cost me £65 (refurb/exchange) that was with a 12 month warranty and we changed it ourselves, took about an hour.

Keep us posted and hope you get it sorted.

The faults on that snap on machine, what module was the top fault stored in?

I have this fault currently with a 2007 Seat Leon but the alternator is brand new 2 days ago yet this morning when trying to start it was flat again. The battery is only a few months old so I'm struggling to locate the fault. I've pulled fuses and still nothing can anybody help?

Also... stupid as it sounds. Make sure nothings left in the cig lighter 12v. On my PFL Leon, both lighter sockets are permanently live and it's had the battery drained twice from a bluetooth adapter. My FL Leon is weird, I drained the battery (for a change) by leaving a 12v to USB adapter in the lighter. On inspection with a mutlimeter, it was cycling on and off constantly (not enough to put the LED power light on the adapter, but enough to drain the battery over 3 days).

Everything on the car is factory and standard there's no aftermarket parts. This is why I'm confused. Battery was on charge last night and this morning dead already this is confusing???
