hi guys, i need to compress the 4pots in the porsche calipers to get pads in, whats the best way anyone has done this, with or without tools?

the calipers are not on the car at the minute....

i have tried opening the bleed nipple and pushing the old pads back and the pistons dont want to budge, a little trickle of fluid come out but not much...

Just in case the bleed nipple is bust remove the cap of the brake fulid resi and just go slowly! I did to fast and fulid went everywhere... ;)
 
If there still on the car get a big assed screw driver in there and wedge between the disc and the top/front face of the pistons.
If there not on the car a 'G' clamp would be the one with some metal plates or wood
 
I just used a flat blade screwdriver between the old pad & disc face and pushed them back slowly... got the old disc & pads off, but didn't push them back far enough to get the new ones on, so just pushed them back by holding the caliper in the palm of my hand & pushed them in with my thumb... they're not that tight, certainly wouldn't need a wind back tool for it - not that you'd get one in there anyway.
 
there not on the car, the pistons woont push back far enough to the seals so there flush, one side is but the other not....

opened the nipples and a little fluid came out when pushed the pistons.

maybe the wood way may be best, cant get enough strength in there
 
The calipers definately arent wind back type are they?
Some calipers have to be wound back whereas some can just be pushed.
With wind back calipers no amount of squeezing, pressing, jiggling bits of wood will get them back.
If they are push back then a big pair of water pump pliers can often do the trick

think only the back is wind back front arnt just need big screw driver and some force
 
The front Brembo's are'nt wind backs.

I squeezed mine back in with my hand's :whistle: But A "G" cramp or a set of Mole grips would do the job.

It wasn't on my LCR, but on my VR6, the fronts were wind back, I'm a plumber, so happened to have a set of pump pliers, and they worked great, really easy!! The backs I had to push, I found the wood way was best, just place it on them, and push!! Bit of 4 x 2 should do it!!:D

Did they just retract themselves then with twisting?
A lot of windback ones require pressure be applied simultaneous to the turning, add to that the fact that some require less pressure than others so a tool with too course a thread will just jam it up (combi van rear for defo), on top of that some cars (some jags i believe) use a left hand thread. I'm sure its just to cause hassle lol.

Another thing, although it doesn't apply in james' case as the calipers are removed, is when pushing pistons back, it is good practice to release the bleed nipple to avoid forcing the brake fluid back. I know on some Vauxhalls it flips a seal in the master cylinder or something, that said i've always just pressed them back on BM's and never had a problem so it doe4sn't apply to all cars, but doing it wont have any adverse affects
