Blinking light on gear selector

Hi guys,

Been having a weird issue with my 2015 ibiza cupra - the lights on the gear selector are flashing and it's locked in park and won't start. Happened after driving on the motorway in heavy rain and the dash gauges went to 0 which suggests some kind of electrical fault.

Plugging the scan tool into the OBD2 reader causes an error and nothing will connect. I've charged the battery and checked fuses but still nothing. I've manually put the gearbox into neutral but the car still won't start.. Just a loud beep, spanner symbol on dash with "inspect".

Hello. Did you solve the issue ? I have similar thing with my Ibiza
Hi mate,
Yes in my case it was caused by water ingress at the TCU connection, needed a new TCU that had to be recoded with the data from the one that came off.

The blinking light means there's no connection with the TCU (transmission control unit/transmission control module). Various reasons why that can happen and is a known problem with the auto box in these.

Trying to find someone to diagnose and work on the car was an absolute nightmare so good luck with it, I had 3 garages look at it and tell me it was either a wiring loom or fuse box problem. One VAG specialist told me it needed a full new gearbox and mechatronic unit but that he doesn't work on Ibiza's as access to everything is so tight.

There is quite a bit of chatter online concerning the actual switch that tells the system where the DSG is, there seems to be 2 different versions of kits to correct what sounds like being a design error!

So, if this is what is wrong with your car, either make sure that it is only the repair kit that is sourced and fitted - and not a complete DSG gear lever assembly, or buy the correct kit yourself if you are able and willing to fit it.

Edit:- this is mainly just an alert to anyone that does "gear shift" issues or specific gear shift problems, not a generic "fix all".
