First post on this forum - after i've just sold my Seat Ibiza!

Basically, nice lad comes over to view my car on Thursday and we took the car for a spin, it was bouncing down but the car drove fine as it always has done. I parked the car up on the drive and he agreed on a price, I left the car untouched just incase anything happened as I knew he was coming Saturday morning.

The car is a 1.2 Seat Ibiza Copa, 61 Plate with 33k on the clock. Always passed MOT's and is regularly serviced, I've never had to have anything done to it apart from new tyres!

Saturday came and the bloke turned up, handed over the money and signed the relevant forms. I get in the car to pull it off the drive (forward) as its quite tight and he hadn't drove the car himself. I put it in first gear and release the handbrake and go to move away and the car will literally not move, as if the brakes are stuck on. I tried again, turning the engine off etc and pressing the brake to see if I could release it. Eventually after a few attempts the car moves but to a horrible screeching noise that sounded like the handbrake was still on. I pulled up down the road and then the ABS light comes on the dashboard and stays on for about a minute, disappears and everything was completely fine.

The bloke who was buying the car was obviously a bit concerned, I explained nothing like this had ever happened before, typical! He agreed to take the car and if it happens again he will take it in to the garage and see what the issue is - I will contribute some money towards any costs if required.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Mainly for piece of mind as this was a genuine sale of a well looked after car and it was a shame this happened.

No the car was driven round the block with him as passenger to show him how it drove, took it easy as it was bouncing down. I'm not clued up on cars to be honest, just was concerned to know whether it will do it again, and how serious it would be to fix

I don't know about where you live but where i have been living the weather has been awful, i.e heavy rain and cold temperatures, it could just be something like some water got in on the disc and seized it up a bit, i had a case where i cleaned a car once, parked it up and went to drive it the next morning and a wheel was locked, only after forcing it to drag for a meter did it release, all i say it really needs is a good longish drive drive to heat the discs up

All that happened was the pads stuck/rusted to the discs due to being damp when applied, saw this a lot as a breakdown mechanic, even been known to get the copper mallet out on occasions to free them, the abs light could be down to the brakes dragging whilst freeing off,if all seems ok now don't be concerned,HTH.

+1 on this.

Thanks for the replies - I feel a bit better now!

I also had the car jet washed and cleaned before he came for a test drive and they are always quite aggressive with the washer around the wheels so maybe that contributed as well. In terms of the long drive he lives around 15/20 miles away with quite a bit of dual carriageway driving so hopefully that helped when he was taking it home. He's text to say it drove fine and everything so let's just hope it doesn't happen again.
