Christ well I can imagine if you insurance has come down that much it does seem like a saving, but to me thats still an horrific sum of money, especially as its more than most Cupra's are worth.

16v's do like to guzzle the juice around town/local driving, you won't get above 30mpg. On the open road you can nudge 40mpg. You'll also double you yearly road tax.

I've had two 8v's and one 16v and experience has shown that the 16v is a lot less reliable than the 8v. Definitely get one with full service history and be prepared for a few bills such as clutches, cambelts and gear linkages 60k onwards. If the you already have a 1.4 you may know of the pedal box issue but double check it on the cupra's as the clutch is a lot heavier and they are about £350 to do at a garage.

After that its the usual stuff for cars of that age such as rust, suspention rattles, MOT advisories etc.

I've worked in garages for the last 7 years, but i still get ****ed off when my car breaks down

I've raced 8v's & 16v's at santa pod. In my experience the 8v shoots off first, but when your both in 3rd gear the 16v catches up & zooms past.

ive had an 8v golf, and now ive got a 16v ibiza.. i know theres differences in weight etc.. but the 16v is definatly better top end, the 8 valves have more torque.

its weird people say that 8v are less reliable than 16v, imo its the other way round. guess you just have to buy the right one thats been looked after.

but anyway... if you arent worried about the running costs get a 16v! the 8v arent that much better on fuel anyway and you can get the 16v mapped to get better fuel economy!! DO IT!

I have a kiwi valver and its my 1st car im 23 now and have had it 2 years now and absolutley love it! Puts a smile on my face every time i drive it as its so much fun to drive and pretty quick aswell. Insurance I paid £1700 in my 1st year and £800 last year (with no previous no claims)with Admiral so its not too expensive although the tax is £220 for a year. I would suggest the 16V based upon better pulling in high end gears, true the 8V is very similar off the mark but the valver will pull away : )

My advice buy it while they are cheap ish :) Ibiza are the future classic hot hatch and wont be cheap for long, also i work for an insurance company which do good prices on gti models and young hot hatch drivers so get one and do research on insurance you CAN always find cheap insurance ;)

I just got an 8v to go along with my mk 2 TDi which my missus now drives, I'm very happy with the power althogh the car isn't quite standard. I'm 27 and pay around 700 for my insurance (fully comp) with axa, The 16v was a lot more to insure and a bargain 8v came up on ebay so thats the way I went! I get around 25 mpg but I'm booting it a lot still at the mo cos I love the sound it makes!
hope this helps
