some don't need cleaning mate, depends on the filter

you can get universal / pipercorss / k&n cleaning kits from eBay that lubricate the filter etc, if it's really OLD, just replace it.

These kits are oil based and will kill the MAF ;) just use fairy liquid mate

In fairness, I think that this is due to how people use then. One my BMC, I used a K&N recharge, and its basically a cleaner that you spray and let soak into the element, then rinse off slowly. Yes, there IS a oil spray, but you are only meant to use a very light coating of it, to aid in the filtration of the air. I bet that those who have had oil/MAF problems probably doused theirs in oil and then thats why they've had droplets go though.

Tbh even a brand new oiled filter can kill the MAF they don't don't like them end of ;) think of your car as a angry 5 year old that's how temperament they can be :(

cheers guys, so if i just get a can of the cleaner and like you said just let it soak in and rinse off slowly i should be ok? it is a completely dry filter so don't want to gunk it up with any other addative :)

If it's a dry filter just wash it with fairy liquid and water and let it dry simple as don't use an oil based cleaner on a dry filter and don't use and oiled filters on these cars

If it's a foam filter bin it.
Get a jetex cone filter or a standard panel filter to replace it.

why is that? had a jetex and this massive dry foam pipercross filter works alot better, getting 192G/S on logs compared with 179G/S with others
