Compatible gearboxes

On my search for a new gearbox ive came across a few which look similar from other vehicles (mainly the mk4 golf GTI 1.8 20VT)

My mk3 ibiza cupra has a 1.8 20VT with engine code AYP & the original gearbox code EWP

however ive been told the mk4 golf GTI has the same engine just with different codes and ive seen a lot of "EVS" gearboxes for sale would these be directly compatible with my AYP engine or is there any other gearbox codes that would definately work?

Any 02j box or 02a box from a fwd car will fit. May have to change the bell housing depending on what you get. They will also have slightly different ratios or final drives.

hmm any 02J's? Are these all from 1.8 20VT engines? any recommended gearbox codes?

Not all 1.8T 20VT are 02js. An ibiza or golf 5 speed box are your best bet. 02a are vr6 boxes and have slightly different ratios and need the bell housing from your 02j box to fit it.

02A are not just VR6 boxes , they are previous generation...
example 16v ABF ibiza has 02A box, which is v.similar ratios but lower final drive so slightly better acceleration possible.. (3.67FD vs 3.3FD on your 02J box)

02A goes straight on, but does'nt have all the bolt fixings thru to sump like the 02J ones does, but it fits and works fine. Shift towers very different, but you can swap these between boxes most of the time.
