I thought that the turbo and injectors were different between the 140 and 170? Or was that with the older PD units?

do a search on wikepedia for diesel particulate filter that will give you all the info you need

early PD engines suffered with the DPF as basically it was retrofitted to an engine that wasn't designed for it

The newer CR common rail engines are designed for a DPF and I have not heard of anyone on here having an issue

I have the CR170 FR 16000 miles any only see the DPF light when I first switch the ignition on

Pretty sure I can safely say CR with DPF don't give it another thought unless someone else knows otherwise :)

hmmm may have jumped the gun here got this from Audi forum

There is not much difference in hardware between the 140 and 170.
According to ETKA, the CR-170 has different part numbers for the following.

Turbo
2 different intercooler boost pipes
Flywheel
DPF
EGR cooler gasket

Not sure if the same applies to the older PD unit.

Can't remember if the 170 has larger front brakes, will check later this evening.

I know it's an old thread but the info could be handy. The Euro CR 140 and CR 170 are one of the same engine. Same block, pistons, conrods etc. The injectors are also the same (Compared my part numbers on my CR140 against my mates CR170 and the numbers match and ETKA). Of course part numbers will vary from year to year..

There is one definate difference between the 2 variants as i have proved for myself. The turbo. I recently put on a CR 170 turbo to my Passat CR 140. Side by side at first glance look similiar in size but the compressor housing is thicker for more airflow for a start and i'm guessing larger compressor too.. Also the plastic outlet pipe even though looks identical, inside on the CR 170 has a larger diameter airflow. There are rumours that some CR 140's use the CR 170 turbo but can't say for sure..

I can't say 100% this is the case for other common rail engines in the VAG range like the Octavia and FR my comparisons are against the CR in the new Passat CFFB (140) CFGB(170) CFGC(177). Also note the 170 turbo bolts straight up to the 140 engine (as long as you have the 170 turbo oil lines)and runs as normal on the standard map.
