Hi all,

First time posting here after reading through a couple of other threads over the last day or two and hoping for some advice.

My 71-plate Cupra Leon VZ2 has suddenly developed the well-known “double-click” noise from the centre/front speaker (just under the windscreen). The clicks are constant 24h, whether the car engine is on/off and locked/unlocked. The SOS error on the dashboard seems to come and go when driving, and the infotainment is stuck permanently on the “Loading…” screen bearing it totally useless.

I’ve already tried the soft reset (holding the power button for 15 seconds) with no success. Car drives fine otherwise.

A couple of extra details:
  • I’m 3 years 11 months into a 4-year lease (without maintenance package)
  • My local Cupra-approved dealer can’t book me in until after the lease is due to be returned.
  • From what I can tell, the standard manufacturer warranty is 3 years, so I’m assuming I may need to pay for this myself.
Questions I’m hoping someone can help with:
  1. Has anyone had this exact fault and knows whether it was fixed as part of a recall/software update or quality campaign? (Seems to be a common MIB3/SOS module failure.)
  2. Is this generally covered by Cupra/VW even outside warranty due to safety implications with the SOS system?
  3. Did anyone get this fixed without going through the an approved Cupra dealer (or is dealer the only option due to the software tools needed)
Any advice or experience would be massively appreciated — I’m conscious that if this is classed as more than “fair wear and tear” I could get hit with a charge when I return the car or they may not collect at all due to warning light on dashboard for SOS (please call workshop).

Thanks!

Very common issue. You need an infotainment software update and probably the SOS module firmware updating.

You'll get the SOS warning and pops from the speaker when the car loses mobile signal and it doesn't know what to do. You might also notice the GPS going absolutely loopy, but that's less frequent.

Thanks Skysthelimit.

I take it this would no longer be under warranty and would need to be taken to a ‘Cupra approved garage’ to be able to fix these faults?

You can do the infotainment yourself via a usb stick (lots of posts on here with how-to guides and probably the files if you look). However if it goes wrong and it bricks, it's on you...

Shouldn't be that expensive to get the dealer to do it (I had mine under warranty so can't comment on cost), but they'll likely need the car for a day or so.

Thanks so much for this mate. Managed to get booked in with a different garage on Monday so hopefully they can fix.

Last Q for me if you don’t mind, given I had a service on the car around 8 months ago (and have been annually servicing the car as per manufacturers recommendation), is this something I should raise with the previous garage as their cause?

We can fix this for you, much cheaper & quicker than the main dealers :)

Hearing lots of dealers charging £250+ per update, it's disgusting. We don't charge much more than that for every outstanding update

Was the servicing carried out at a dealer, or 3rd party? Servicing etc shouldn't cause it directly, but if it was at a main dealer, it would be worth checking if they were supposed to check for software updates whilst it was in.... If they were supposed to and haven't, you've got an argument for them to do it now... You should be on at least 1940 at this point, my guess is you're still on 17xx if you're having the SOS issue.

Checking for updates isn't routine. Only updates included in service campaigns are compulsory

I'd agree, dealership has only ever provided updates during warranty repairs or, as above, part of a campaign.

I was told this was because some updates, especially modules, can result in component failure.

It's more that they can only recover the labour costs from the manufacturer for warranty work & service campaigns

It's very very rare for control modules to fail during routine updates
