Have also posted this in another thread, so applogies for the duplication.

I had been getting a clicking / clunking nosie when breaking at low speeds. I had thought this was the breaks, but having had them checked it would now appear that the noise is coming from the gearbox area. I have found the below post, which seems to describe my problem exactly as is (including thinking I have a tool lose in the boot ! ) Has anyone else had this problem with a DSG....the car is off to Seat on Tuesday for some TLC so would welcome some views before I go there.

I took the car to a brakes specialist on Friday, they checked pads and discs - all fine. Lifted up the car and spun the wheels and the clicking noise appears to be coming from the gearbox. I stood underneath the gearbox area and low and behold the noise was from there......

since Friday, I have done a search on gearbox problems with clicking noises at low speeds and got this.........the symptoms are 100% as I have them......

"DSG Gearbox Click/Clunk 3rd-2nd
Hi guys,

I recently picked up a second had Golf TDI about a week ago. All week I've been enjoying driving the Golf and so far I'm really enjoying the DSG and diesel combination!

Last night driving home I noticed something different to what was normally happening. So far the gearbox has been smooth, silky and changes without so much as making a peep.

Last night however, when I was slowing down, I noticed a slight clunk as the car was downshifting from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes from 2nd to 1st when coming to a complete stop.

I took it out for a drive again today (after emptying my boot, as I thought it may have been my tools rolling around) and it does it intermittently. It still feels smooth to drive and doesn't lag, shudder, hesitate, or anything like that, but the slight clunk can be felt through the floor of the car and doesn't seem right. It definitely hasn't done this before, well at least in the week that I've owned the car and the couple of times I test drove it before.

I'm really nervous now, as this car is a 2006 model, so out of warranty, and everywhere I read it suggests that a clunk in the gearbox is a sign of the DSG failing which = $$$$'s

It's done around 71,000kms and has always been dealer serviced. I also made sure that it had the 60,000km DSG service, where they changed the gearbox oil etc " - end
would be interested in any opinions. The noise from my DSG is the click/clunk when coming to a stop, so appears to be either when the gear disengages or comes from 2 to 3.
end many thanks in advance for any views.

(no comments on grammar or spelling needed thanks ! )

As I said in the other thread, mine is clunking a bit too and has for a while... was fobbed off by seat saying its fine nothing wrong with it after a drive and showing them exactly what i meant... did my best to get them to budge but wouldnt have it as they said is disengaging and engaging gears fine.

Will be the mechatronics unit, well thats the most likely.

My FR TFSI DSG did this occasionally, and did it more as its problem moving off from stationary progressed from being an occasional irritant to being a real worry. Only rarely was it so bad that I'd think "what the hell was that?" - more often I'd only notice the clunk from 3 to 2 when slowing gently if the stereo was turned down.

I couldn't convince the dealer there was anything wrong with mine either, so I was happy to part-ex it with them for a (non-DSG) Ecomotive. :)

That might sound drastic, but outside of warranty I didn't want to be the one owning the car when it eventually needed a super-expensive repair... and I needed to cut my fuel bills anyway as the FR was relatively thirsty, so it was an easy decision for me.
