I have a Cupra TDI150. A short while ago it started making a knocking noise from the engine. I have worked on cars alot before and thought it sounded like a big end bearing playing up. It is always there, but gets worse with revving and engine heating up. It is a deep knock and does not sound like the tappets and is a lot slower than a tappet click. It is a constant knock as though it is going with the crank. I had the Dual mass flywheel changed as it was worn (apparently). No good. I had the big ends checked. No joy. Now costing a fortune with no luck.

Can anyone here help me out before I have to remortgage the house. I have only had this car for 8 weeks and the 'warranty' doesn't cover wear and tear!!
I also had a suspension coil snap the day before this happened. Not alot of joy with the Cupra so far!!!

The garage said to me he will go down that path, but needs more info about it.

Do you have any details about these problems, or what goes wrong?

He says it could be a gudgeon pin, but so far from what I've read on this site, no ones has problems with them.

I saw that. Will that make a sound like a big end going?

I always thought that anything on the top end would make a different noise.

Plus, if it is that. Any idea of how many spare organs I am having to donate to get is fixed?

Really not sure - i am by no means a mechanic or an expert. Worn cam lobes would get worse when warm and would change sound with an increase in revs. I am fairly sure you can remove the engine cover and have the lobes and cam inspected for wear.

Thanks fella.

I've worked on a lot of engines in my past, but this one has me stumped.

I did tell him (my 'mechanic') about reading lots about the cam problems with the lobes.
He wasn't convinced. Still, time, and I guess money, will tell.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

One Detail I forgot to mention. I had an oil change only a couple of weeks ago. As there seems to be alot about needing the correct type of oil, could damage happen only after a short length of time. If it could, is the garage liable for the costs for the repair?

Still, if anyone has any experience with various conditions with these engines can you let me know. I still think the noise is too deep for a cam, but I could be wrong.

Well I finally found out what the problem was. And boy it aint cheap.

The cam had worn the hydraulic tappets, all the way through one of them. That was what the knocking noise was. (that surprised all of us how that sound was so different to the usual).
Well, 1 valve, 8 hydraulic tappets and a cam gone to the race track in the sky. Was gonna cost about £1600+ to get it fixed. But managed to find a place to get a re-con head for £450 + VAT and delv.

Note to others, do not buy one of these cars unless you are very sure the correct oil has been used. £7000 then six weeks later £1000!
Definition: irony: I sold my last car because it was going to cost me £1000 to get it up to scratch, I spend more money to get a better car so I wouldn't have to waste money on repairs......D'oh!!!!!!!!
