Exhaust sound on a tdi

I got a mk1 leon tdi and was thinking about getting a new back box to give it a nice sound.

I was thinking de-cat and back box, but some of my mates have done this on there 306 dturbo's and it just sounds like a tractor!
What sort of back box am i looking at to get a good sound which isnt to rough?

I am also getting a chip at the end of the summer so would it be best to do exhaust first then the chip?

thanks
sam

2 bits of advice:

1. no matter what you do to your exhaust it will sound like a tractor because its a diesel not a petrol so if anything it will just sound like a louder tractor

2. "chips" are wank, get a proper custom remap carried out by a reputable company.

hope thats some help.

i had a powerflow exhaust on my ST mondeo TDCI and it sounded like a petrol car under acceleration. Still sounded like a tractor when idling though

Right ok so it will always sound like a tractor whatever.

I am getting a remap just the company call is a superchip. The have a good rep for excellent tdi tuning.

If i were to go with the exhaust would it be best to do it first, before the remap or after, or wont it make much odds.

If its just a stage 1 generic map, it wont matter which comes first.

Bilston.
I've seen youtube clips of a german (i think) guy who has fitted a 4" milltek turbo back and go some good noise under acceleration but at idle it will sound rough. Theres alot of theory behind adding 2 stroke oil to you fuel as an additive which surposedly reduces idle noise but i'm very scepticle.
