Fob battery life.

Replaced the fob battery this year already and yesterday it failed, no dash warning just stopped working, bought from a known and reliable source with a very long shelf life, any reason for these failing so quick, I seem to have changed a couple in the last three years already, and my set of keys don’t get the most use, once maybe twice a week?

I'd think that it is called "progress", my daughter, who's May 2019 Leon Cupra has not exactly had that much use over the past 18 months or so, had a battery warning back in May maybe, so I swopped the original Panasonic for a new Sony - that was my fault for confusing the brand that VW Group use at factory. I think that her partner's key is still okay as he only drives that car once in a while as he does not like modern cars!

I replaced the batteries in my wife's August 2015 VW Polo late last year only because I was replacing them in my 2011 Audi S4 fobs for the first time as well.

Previous 2000 VW Passat 4Motion and 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V only got their batteries replaced as I felt that they were running out of reliable "lifetime" and not useful life after 8 and 6 years in use.

Edit:- none of these cars had/have KESSY.

@martin j. - does your car have keyless entry? I’ve read that a year’s battery life is fairly typical on keyless cars, but there’ll always be exceptions.

I’m on my first car with keyless entry / keyless start. I’ve had it almost a year so may just change the fob batteries in the next few days as a precautions measure rather than wait for them to fail. On any other car I‘ve owned I’ve never had to change any of the fob batteries, and some of those cars I owned for nearly five years.

I had to replace both my batteries after 1 year in my R ST.
I ended up putting the next size battery up in then, can’t exactly remember but something along the lines of 2025 to 2032.
Fitted in ok and I hope they will last a little bit longer

Not got keyless entry, good old fashioned 3 button fob, Honda fob had 1 battery change in 12 years, never did many changes when at Kia, service desk always sent customers to me as I kept the batteries in the parts dept, some were ‘fun’ to open.

Mine sprung a dash warning on key battery about 6 months ago after about 2 years of use. I changed the battery but the fob didn't work so I put the original battery back and all good still more than 6 months later. Not sprung another warning...yet!
