Short story. I was trying to put the car in reverse and it refused to do so. Upon inspection i found this plug had managed to wedge itself in my engine bay and was the reason why i couldn't put the car in reverse

I've done some research and this is all i could find

http://www.audiworld.com/forums/tt-mk1-discussion-9/ummm-shouldnt-there-plug-something-here-1935534/

the part number is: 02n 301 115 b

does anyone know where it pops back in place? i can't seem to find it. Also is there any issues when this isn't in place?

Looks like the bung that covers the flywheel inspection / timing marks
I don't have one in mine
But should just screw back in vibrations probably worked it loose

Looks like a bung/stopper for a hot water bottle? Don't know about the above but that does sound more feasible.

Definitely the inspection/timing port cover off the bellhousing. There should be a corresponding hole on top of the area between the gearbox and the engine, which you can see the flywheel through. It is close to the gear selector input shaft so its no wonder it got tangled up there.

The main issue if it's not on are that bits of debris might get into the bellhousing and interfere with clutch operation or damage the clutch release bearing.

Yeah it definitely goes in the gearbox where Tessitura said.. But it does look like a hot water bottle top too!
