Fuel Gauge

So I got in my car the other day, knowing I only had about 150 miles left in the tank, to it showing I had almost a full tank with 400 miles in it... I couldn't work out whether I'd forgot that I had refuelled. After not trusting it and a bit of driving later, I stuck what change I had in my pocket in just to see what would happen... The gauge reset and showed that I had 65 miles left and the right amount on the level indicator.

Left it a couple of days and now it seems to happen whenever I leave the car off over night, and the only way to reset it is through putting some more fuel in.

Anyone having this problem or have any ideas?

Muchos appreciated

There are two trip computers running - one resets after a couple of hours - one keeps track for much longer.

IIRC - with a little 1 in the corner - the computer resets after two hours of not driving.
with a little 2 in the corner - the computer records till its reset.

You toggle between the two with a quick press of the button UNDER the wiper stalk

What I'm saying is the fuel gauge is registering that there is half a tank of fuel more in the car than there actually is, so rather than bring half full on 4 bars, it's sitting at the top... Which in turn is what's giving me the miles till empty reading... Which the figure remains the same on both trips.

Could it not be a faulty fuel level sensor? The car calculates your range off the current reading of average MPG on the trip computer against what it 'thinks' the computer says it has left in the tank, so its pointing to the fuel level sensor for me if its saying its got a full tank when it hasn't!

Aye. The weird part is, when I refuel it seems to correct itself for a short while.

Hopefully it's covered under warranty, got it booked in for June 2nd... Earliest time I could get a courtesy car -.- which they want to change me got :/

Only other thing I can think to try is to disconnect the negative lead on the battery for half an hour or so and see if it resets it, but I'd be surprised if it sorts it

Ah ok - yes that sounds wrong.

If I brim mine the gauge reads full.

And it stays on full till I have nearly 200 miles on the trip - then it starts dropping.

Empty is pretty accurate - I have run the car all the way down to 0 miles left - and still run 30 miles passed 0.

and also the fact it says the car is a 45 litre car and as ive proven ive had 70+ litres in it and still could have kept going

The point I'm making isn't to do with how much fuel or the distance i can get off a full tank.

I simply had just under half a tank when I parked up at night, then when I started the car the next day it was registering that the car had a full tank (which because of the incorrect reading it was then calculating that I had extra miles available).

The incorrect fuel reading will only reset back to a real value if I put fuel in (so I've been topping up by a fiver just to get an accurate reading), however once left, the car will show a full tank again when started up... The weird part is, the tank reading will go down as I'm drivinng at a bit more of an accelerated rate than normal. If that makes any more sense?

sounds like the sender in the tank is faulty and giving an incorrect reading. Suppose a vagcom scan would be the first port of call.

Until then I'd reset the trip each time you fill and fill up again after about 400 miles.
