Gearbox Screwed?

OK, Big gear related problems today, can anybody offer some advice or has this happened to their car? I have a 2004 Seat Leon S 1.6 which had a new clutch fitted about 12 months ago. All has been well, until about 5 months ago I noticed the gear change had become a little notchy (sometimes difficult to get into 5th, sometimes 1st) It felt to me like the gear connection needed some adjustment but I never got around to it.
Last Saturday I was driving in 5th. Gear on the motorway (85mph – ish / could have been 70mph..) hadn’t touched the gear stick for a good while when there was a loud revving noise, much like when the stick jumps out of gear (except the stick didn’t move) My first thought was that the gear connector had snapped? I pulled over and every gear works except fifth which is just like being in neutral. Managed to drive it with the remaining 4 gears 5 miles to the nearest service station to call the AA.
Once at the service station I could hear a terrible rattling noise coming from the gearbox, like some change rattling in tumble dryer! This noise stops if you depress the clutch.

I’m thinking the gearbox is screwed as in a bearing has gone, or something that connects 5th. Gear has broken and is now bouncing around in the box.
I am now agonising about replacing the car or getting it repaired, I have a quote of £786 (replace/fit/12monthswarranty/collection and delivery) Sounds ok?
Obvs would like it cheaper and will continue to gather quotes. I don’t want to spend the money to later find out that it is something to do with the new clutch or gear linkage.
Most other things on the car are great and it seems a shame to lose it when it potentially has more to give even if there is an expensive bill to pay?

Any advice, experience would be greatly appreciated!

Based in North London, if anyone has recommendations?

It's a tough decision, I had to make the same decision a couple of years back when the main bearing went in my gearbox. I was getting quotes of £1200 from several gearbox specialists, I did get a £700ish quote from a place near lakeside, but I couldn't find any reviews and they had several different business names and seemed a bit sketchy.
I ended up using a gearbox specialist that had a good reputation and they did a bearing repair for £600, however after getting the car back and looking at dashcam footage one of the staff had used it for the weekend picking up their Girlfriend and driving to the chip shop. They also messed up the starter motor connection, re-used the dogbone bolts which fell out after a month and left a bolt out of the air filter box.

Thanks for responses guys, have decided to get it fixed £786 for new (reconditioned) gearbox 12 month warranty pick up and drop off, gutted at the expense but love the car and it's cheaper than buying a new one! Onwards and upwards! Will report back on experience
