Getting Slower?

Quick question.

I've been driving SEAT since my very first car 20 years ago and I've been a member since 2008!
I've had 1.2 Petrols, 1.9TDI's, 2.0TDI CR and PD, 1.8T 20V in the Ibiza Cupra and the Leon Cupra R

One thing I cant help noticing is that these modern Seats are getting slower?
To the point where I dont think they're remotely sporty anymore.

My second ever car when I was 19 was an Ibiza 1.9TDI with 150HP and loads of torque.
My third ever car was a 1.8T 20V MK4 Cupra
Then a more sensible, 2.0TDI Leon with 170hp.

The biggest engine they put in an Ibiza is 1.0 with 115hp!
They do a Leon 2.0TDI now but its only 150hp!

I had a 2017 Ibiza with 110hp and it was pokey enough but when you wanted anything out of it you had to wring its neck.
My Mrs recently bought an Ateca and the biggest engine was a 1.5 Petrol with 150HP.
Apart from the Throttle mapping being absolute garbage and it never doing anything when you put your foot down a little its just not enough for such a massive vehicle.

2.0TDI with 170hp and a lump of torque would've been PERFECT for this car.

Whats going on? I know they've got the Cupra Brand now for all the quick stuff but most of that range is slow with small engines?!
Theres no middle ground anymore, its totally missing.

What happened to Seat making high quality, Cheap cars with sporty engines?
I miss those MK4 Ibizas! What is the overarching plan? Are they being forced into this position.

I now drive a 2014 Audi A6 3.0 V6 as I was catagorically sick and tired of listening to horrible sounding 2.0 4 Cylinders and wanted something that actually felt fast that didn't need its engine screaming to get it.

I suspect it might be due to the need to keep emissions low. If manufacturers exceed statutory average emissions targets across their range of vehicles - and those targets become more stringent over time - they’re hit with some very harsh fines and penalties.

It won’t just be Seat / Cupra focusing on smaller engined cars; many (most?) other car manufacturers will be doing the same.

What about going down the hybrid route? Lexus/Toyota? Some Lexus hybrids are very quick, whilst keeping emissions and running costs low 👌🏼
