Gloss black grille mod

Following an unexpected incident involving a pheasant, I took the opportunity to paint my grille gloss black.

Turns out the centre grill comes in three parts, the grille, the surround trim, and the badge. A complete set is about £120-150 so I bought just the grill for £50 and took the bumper off in order to disassemble the parts for painting and re-attaching to the new grille.

Took an entire day to remove the bumper, prep, paint, and refit everything, but it looks much better now. I always hated how dirty and cheap the grey plastic looked.

I also took the badge apart and used colour matched paint to make it monsoon grey. I’m not a big fan of the full gloss black look and I think this is a bit more factory finish.

I have a monsoon grey Leon too, never though of paint matching the badge but that looks decent. Been wanting to get the chrome grille surround black since I got the car.

Removing the bumper isn’t too difficult. It’s the first time I ever attempted it.

I’d advise sanding back the chrome parts heavily and using adhesion promoter. All the parts in the grille and the surrounding trim are a snug fit so too many heavy layers of paint will make refitting more difficult.

Debadge and rear chrome to tackle next!
