Golf GT TDI fault

Work colleague has just returned from limping his 53 plate Golf GT TDI 150 with 80k to the local stealership after a sudden catastrophe. He reports a sudden loud rapping/tapping and vibration from the engine in line with the engine speed, and a significant drop in power. Engine still goes but the noise and vibration is most noticeable up to about 30mph wherupon it begins to quieten down. Apparently the mechanic at the VW dealer just sucked air over his teeth when he heard it...

Any ideas? New engine job?

Could be anumber of things but
1. Camshaft and tappets worn out, common on pd 150 at around the 80k mark
2. Boost hose(s) blown. Any black smoke with the power loss?

Id be inclined to suggest camshaft/camshaft follower, however do the TDI's use hydraulic tappets? Could be a sever lack of pressure in these, causing them to not self adjust thus mucking up compression timings therefore giving the loss in power.

Yeah, if say the sound isnt consistant with a boost leak/popped pipe.

Doesnt sound good, hope it gets sorted

Camshaft lobes worn causing damage to valves and head. Requires complete new head.

Stealer price: £3400

Ouch. :-o

Forget that
Call aw engineering (on internet)
cam kit inc followers circa £500
Second hand head £300/400 max
Suggest new cam belt and water pump while you are there.
Circa £1500 all in.

Usually by not using 505.01 spec oil but it can happen anyway. I have been told the camshafts on 150pd engines are quite soft. Does not seem to be the case with the 130 pd

I'd lilke that diagnosis carefully checked.

Surely the cam lobes for the PD injectors suffer the most wear and will go first.

The cam certainly needs replacing.

The cam-followers might. I can't see the injectors needing replacement though.

And how do worn cam lobes cause damage to the head???

They're just quoting a replacement head price and hoping you'll go for it. Yes it will fix the problem, but it's overkill, or at least I think so.

I did think it a bit steep. He's having an independent quote him as, let's face it, £3500 on a five year old 80k car is rapidly approaching uneconomical repair territory.

I've paid around £1000 for a complete second hand engine. For that price he could get a pd130 engine, bolt on his turbo and stick it in. Would work fine. :)

I've heard quite a few stories now about the cams wearing out on the PD150s....even when correctly serviced with the right oil :(
