Hello all

I have recently bought a 2000 TDi SE. Its my first diesel so i am getting used to the power low down.

Just a quick question to those in the know:
When i bought the car i had a blocked nose due to a cold an so didn't detect anything amise. However, when i took it home the wife noticed that it had a faint musty smell. The carpets are not damp so i will have to keep an eye it after the next down pour.

I think that i will have to replace the temp sensor as the dial never gets above 60 deg. Would this affect the aircon which does not seem to work? i mean bcause the ECU is reading that the engine is cold (because of the faulty sensor) it it prevent the aircon from functioning properly.

On final question. When should the camblet be changed on these cars?

Thanks in advance for your replies :)

Ive just gone the other way, after having a deisel for a couple of years just got a Toledo 1.8 and cannot get use to having to rev the socks off (over 4k )

Does the Air con just not turn on or is it just not cold? If its not cold that its probably a regas.

Im not exactly sure on cambelt but ital be about 50-60k.

I'm guessing that it's a TDI 110 (with the red I) and not a TDI 90. Just like what I've got :)

Might be the airconditioning. The cooling element generates a lot of condensation and can get a bit musty. See if the smell is worse when the blower is going. Oh, and check the pollen filter as well - if this has got wet then it too could be smelly.

Hmmm. If we assume that the dial is telling you the truth, then constant low temperature could mean a failed thermostat - if it fails open then the engine will be overcooled in the winter. I take it your coolant level is OK?

The side-effect will be no heat source for the airconditioning system, so it can't ever give you warm air. What exactly is wrong with the aircon - no heat, no cold, no fan, air distribution wrong?

The cooling side of the airconditioning will not switch on if the outside temperature is below about 4 degrees - I believe this is to prevent ice forming on the cooling element (the condensor) and blocking the air inlet.

TDI 90 and TDI 110 should both be changed at 60K or 3 years, as far as I know.

Hi thanks for your replies so far

The heater works ok, along with all the other functions, however, when i switch the aircon on and decrease the temp so that it reads 'Low' it never gets cold. I suppose i only goes as cold as the outside tempreture, no cooling effect from the aircon.

Sounds as though it needs regasing then. Doesnt cost too much, shouldnt think you will need to worry about it for a few months though, its freezing as it is!
