I have a 1998 GTI 16V , Have a few problems with it but reasonably happy with the car as I paid a good price for it....Changed all the wheel bearing and it still makes a noise like one is broken,.,, I suppose the only thing left to try is changing the tyres... any one got any ideas....?

Dont think its a CV as its a really loud noise , it starts at about 40 mph and keeps going... makes no difference in clutch is in or out.... Also I am after a front near side fog light for it...

Yeah, all cars look good in all white :p just need to make it quieter and faster...

I am sure that all the info that you require you will find on here.
I just hope that your wallet is big enough....

Changed tyres today , noise still there but has now moved from coming on at 40mph to 50mph... at a loss now... cant see what else it could be...

It does sound as if its something to do with the drive train, drive shafts,CV Joints.

New tyres will improve it as there is less friction being generated with the road.

Sorted this today... after changing both Rear wheel bearings for the second time in 8 weeks the noise has finally gone... so its is now a near perfect car... shame I will have to sell in the new year as I will be loosing my Job...
