It's engine code ARL does anyone know what turbo is fitted to these engines

Cheers

Really...? What strip it down and get some bits for it? What's likely to have gone any idea??

first what were the symtoms of the failed tubo? lots a smoke? loads of noise from it? if you find what turbo you have you will be able to buy a refurb kit for it.

Yea loads of smoke thought the car was on fire then a "chattering/ticking noise" I then turned car off! I am going to try get the turbo off tommorow or over weekend...?! Is there a number on the turbo to find the model of it?

Yes I'm sure it is standard mate, what are they like to get off do you know? Get them off from underneath??

by the sounds of it failed oil seals and maybe damaged bearings. you will have to also strip off you IC to drain any oil out of it. most good turbo places do a deal if you trade your old turbo in. how offen do you service your car as this is the likely cause unless it has moon miles on the unit

It's only covered 85k always serviced on time by main dealer from brand new I was due to service it this weekend aswell!! Ahhh right ok yea the oil has all gone out the engine aswell.!

thats not a lot of miles for a turbo to blow. If you are unsure of what to do i would get a garage to have a look at it. also when you say no oil left in the engine this might have caused damage to the engine and depending how bad the turbo has gone might even damaged the blades cuasing the engine to inhale them. i would get the turbo stripped off if you know what your doing and investigate.

Yea I'm hoping to get it off tommorow yea it's dumped the oil somewhere the AA man said there's oil in the exhaust which points to turbo I turned it off as soon as I heard any slight chattering or anything so hopefully not done any damage to engine really! The car is modified running about 230bhp if that makes any difference to the life of a turbo??

yeah thats defo shortened the life of the turbo. That will be maxing that turbo out no wonder its gone. if your wanting the power maybe a upgrade unit might be a better idea.

That's pushing the standard turbo quite hard if your mapped to 230! I run a hybrid in my mk4 anni &was advised to expect around 225 (that's with supporting mods).
Best way to get these turbo's out is with drivers side driveshaft out & take it out from underneath.
I'd imagine you'll have a nightmare trying to clear the exhaust of oil if it's blown a fair amount past the seals also. I found it easier to upgrade & replace.

Get a new oil supply line from HEL, make sure you do oil & filter also

You will not be at 230hp on a standard turbo - simple as that.

Rebuilding a turbo is NOT as simple as being made out - balancing a turbo and calibrating the VNT mechanism properly (as it will need to be fully removed to be cleaned) can not be done by an amateur mechanic at home if you want it to last more than 5 minutes. If you need to ask the question then you won't be able to do it.

Get a re-con from somewhere reputable, but even then be prepared for no-end of problems with them, or get a new unit or a decent used turbo from another car.

If theres no oil left then you need to remove the exhaust and all boost pipes + intercooler and clean them out thoroughly. If you drove for a period of time without any oil then engine damage is also a possibility.

Main thing is to establish the reason why your turbo has failed - if its a standard turbo and youve been told its 230hp then its possible it has been mapped dangerously requesting unsafe boost levels, could also be a coked-up VNT mechanism etc etc.

Lots to do!

Ok does sound like a lot it has had something something done to the veins that's it, iv got a dyno for 223 bhp I found it lastnight, I drive it for about 200 yards that's it until I could pull up, yea thought as much with intercooler and pipes guna be full of lol! Iv found this one on eBay what you reckon

If it genuinely is 223hp then its a different turbo or a hybrid - replacing with standard will mean the map wont be right for the turbo and will need adjusting.

You might be lucky with the engine then.

Turbo is just another cheap remanufatured one using cheap chinese parts - i would be amazed if the VNT was correctly calibrated

It's deffo the standard turbo mate the cars been in the family since me and had all work done at demon tweeks, so you would say avoid that turbo then??

If its the standard tubby then it was on some very happy rollers and is probably mapped to stupidly high levels of boost.

Im not sure i would spend £300 of my own money, plus a few hours of my time (or £ for labour in a garage) to fit that. I went down the route of having a PD130 turbo re-conditioned and it was only on the 3rd one that i received that it was actually useable - never again
