How to drive a DSG.

Hi all,

A bit of a noob question. Waiting to take order of the new car and I have gone for a DSG for the first time.

What is the best way to drive a DSG? ie in my manual car, whenever Im at a set of traffic lights, or stopped for 20 seconds or more I always put the car in neutral. Do the same principles apply to a DSG?

In short, no.

In neutral the engine will fire back up, as it cancels the stop start out.

You'll need to stick it in P if stopping for a while, or else leave it in D with your foot on the brake.

Hey mate.

In my car (280) I have start stop, so I imagine it is the same across the range.
When you pull up to the lights and put your foot on the break the engine will stop until you lift back off the break.
You can however if you wish stick it in P(park) or N (neutral) and stick the hand break on but that just seems like too much hassle to me so I just hold my foot on the break
I would just recommend driving it as you see fit - you can't really go wrong mate

Everyone seems to drive a little differently but this is my second auto and generally I always leave it in d and hold my foot on the break when stopping at light etc, unless I know I'm going to be stopped for more than a minute then I'll put it in neutral and use the handbrake.

I only used put it in P when parking, but to be fair I'm still getting used to the start stop system so I may use P more as previously said putting it in N will cancel start stop. Personally I think thats stupid but nevermind.

Only ever drove the dsg on my test drive but I remember he start stop worked as in the previous posts. In our manual cupra the engine only stops if you put the transmission in neutral and disengage the clutch. I always use the handbrake and take my foot off the footbrake as I know how annoying it is looking at brake lights of the car in front, particularly at night / in the wet.

I think the way stop start works in the dsg will mean owners sit in traffic with foot on footbrake. Bloody irritating to the drivers sat behind.

Yes as long as you don't stop the selector in N or R (for more than a second I'm guessing?) the engine will not start again, leaving you to turn the key and take it out.

It will cancel stop/start in N because when you put it back into D it won't start, as if your cars switched off nd the lever is in D the car won't start will it? Most autos don't.

They could have it cancel start/stop when the brake pedal is lifted in D mode after transferring it back from N, like as if you have stopped for a moment in D, pressing the brake pedal is still required from changing from N to D so its no different. As a software engineer myself I don't see what the problem is coding that in.
