hi folks,
after searching this forum to help my bro with a starting prob on his MK2 Ibiza gti 2.0 8v (97) i think ive narrowed it down to the following, altho if any u have ideas please post em up.

He drove thro a deep puddle which cut car out, he did the usual, dizzy cap, coil etc but no luck. i then tested the 3pin input cable to the coil, (key turned) pin1-12v. middle pin 0v, should pulse 12v?, pin3-batt negative.

after reading previous posts could this be a prob with the crankcase sensor?, or other ideas?

p.s- ive done a fault read and no faults registered.

thanks in advance.

Hi,
middle pin is signal but coil is triggered on a negative pulse which is too quick for a multimeter to pick up. strip a wire and push it into the connector so that you can push the plug back into coil with wire making contact with center pins, easier if you can get something in the back of the plug but last one i did was solid filled. with ignition on, touching the end of the wire to an earth point (effectively giving a ground signal) will discharge the coil, just pull the coil to cap lead out and put it near to an earth, should see a good spark. remember this is just a test to check coil function, dont go mad making pretty sparks.

As the coil is just a transformer there is no physical connection from the input to output side so i wouldnt think it had any way of knowing if there was a problem at that point.

On the original crank sensor it tends to get damaged where the cable enters the sensor, it is a weak area that is easily damaged when changing the oil filter (im assuming 8v same as 16 here) the newer ones have some re-enforcing to prevent this.
