Hello,

Thought I'd pop in and say hello - picked up a 2000(W) TDI 110 SE over the weekend and I'm sure I'll be using these forums to research any issues that come up.

After hours of cleaning inside and out all seems well except for a louder than expected hiss from the engine under load. I suspect it's a boost leak of some sort, perhaps a split hose or something, so I'll have to do some investigating when I have time and daylight. Is the turbo and its associated pipework at the back of the engine by the bulkhead? It's an AHF unit.

Also need to get the radio going after changing the battery, luckily I have the code so hopefully that won't be too problematic.

Nice to be back in a comfy cruiser! It's only done... Wait for it... 34,000 miles. If any of you experienced owners have any hints and tips for prolonging the life of the engine and running gear I'm all ears!

Thanks

All is well a couple of months in and the MOT was easily passed last week. Lovely.

Quick question though - this car has a 110 TDI AHF engine and I can't quite establish whether the power delivery is normal or not.

In 1st and 2nd gear the car will fire itself down the road with the right level of enthusiasm, but in 3rd and 4th I have sometimes wondered if something's amiss when pressing on. The car seems to provide plenty of torque at around 1200rpm but as you get past 2000rpm the power starts to fade away. On a couple of occasions I've left my foot planted in 3rd to explore the upper rev range and by 3500rpm progress has pretty much stopped.

Is this normal for an AHF? It could be normal for all I know but it does feel a touch wheezy above 2000rpm. There are no warning lights or anything coming on and fuel consumption is respectable, averaging around 55mpg in general use and nearer 60 on motorway runs.

Any thoughts much appreciated, cheers

I've got an ahf engine in my toledo and it pulls from about 1750 through to 4000 then starts to ease off from there in all gears.
Could be you have sticky turbo vanes although that usually results in limp mode.

Does the problem rectify itself when you pull over switch off then restart?

I think it's a permanent characteristic. Useful to know how another AHF behaves. I had thought it was normal but the drop off in power as revs rise does feel increasingly odd the more I drive it. I was initially surprised by the low-down grunt but disappointed by how quickly it tails off. I don't think I'd even be able to achieve 4000rpm in 3rd, 4th or 5th. I thought the redline seemed optimistic...

Thanks for the info. I think I'll have to do some turbo cleaning and see if that helps.

If you know anyone with VCDS it really helps to run a scan to see if there are any electronic issues and then some live logs. That way you can see what's happening and it narrows down possible causes.

The sticky turbo vane thing is a common fault but you could also have an issue with the turbo actuator or the actuator relay. To test the relay you can swap the EGR control for the turbo actuator control. They have the same electrical connectors and vacuum pipes. Just be careful not to break the pipe connections as some are quite delicate.

Hope this helps tracking down the fault. D

Well it's over 12 months since my last post. I've never got round to looking into this myself or getting anyone else to check it out, but the performance issues are starting to frustrate. Something definitely isn't right.

My earlier post is a touch inaccurate. Torque builds at 1900rpm but there's a noticeable drop off at 2200-2300RPM. Last week I was on a long run over the M62 and uphill at 70mph I planted my foot in 5th and the car just sat at the same speed. My dad used to have a Bora with a PD130 engine and while I wouldn't expect the same performance from the 110 AHF it would have accelerated at a significant rate under the same conditions.

I do wonder if this is harming the turbo and affecting fuel consumption, too. Typical average is now 50-54, it doesn't help that the car does quite a few short runs which I'm sure will be clogging up various things.

I have read extensively about people with similar issues on 110 engines. But there are no warning lights. I don't have access to any diagnostic devices or know anyone with them.

I am considering tracking down a local VAG specialist, if such a thing exists in East Yorkshire, but I'm concerned it could cost a lot to find the cause.

If there are any forumites in/near Yorkshire or Cheshire who have sorted out something like this, or have the stuff needed to find the cause that I can then get sorted, I'd love to hear from you.

I don't think I'm able to send PMs to you so it's in the same place that you sent me a message. :) Unless I'm being daft.

I'm not sure, I can't remember how many posts you need to make to pms.
There's nothing new in my inbox but if mine arrived in yours I'll send you another with a contact number and you can call me. Let me know here if that's good. D

Hi guys.

Mancseat - thanks so much for your message. I was going to call you about a month ago but I ended up being swept away with buying a house and being offered a new job. My apologies for not getting in touch.

This evening I spent a bit of time doing some testing and there were some interesting developments. I unplugged the MAF sensor from the air intake then set off down some quiet roads to see how it performed. Pretty much instantly there was improved throttle response and when putting my foot down in 2nd the car was much happier to rev up to and beyond 4000rpm. It felt lovely!

In light of this, do I just need to replace the MAF? If so, it would be useful to know whether I should get a proper part through a main dealer or whether an aftermarket part will suffice. I am tempted to get some contact cleaner to see if that works before buying a new sensor.

As always, your thoughts are very much appreciated. Does this sound like a faulty MAF to you?

Cheers

If the MAF was affecting performance that much I doubt a clean will make any difference as it will be fubarred. If you can go for an original Bosch one, ECP should sell them, or even try your local Seat dealer or VW one for that matter as I know they used to run a service exchange program on MAF's but not sure if they still do.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Main dealer including exchange is £120. However, ECP have two parts available (I'll post part numbers as I can't post URLs yet):

434440320 (£65) is listed as an AHF part (plus other engine codes) but models from 2002-2003. Mine is 2000 (W).

434440617 (£112) is listed as an ASZ part. It also comes with a £36 surcharge, presumably refunded upon exchange of the old item?

There's a 10% discount code available bringing the prices down a bit, valid until the end of Sunday, which is nice.

Any idea which one I should be going for?

Bit more digging...

This one on ECP - 434440617 - has an alternate Bosch number of 0 281 002 531, which matches one listed on Darkside Developments. The Darkside site lists Toledos as suitable but not with the AHF engine, though AHF is a relevant engine under the Golf/Bora list.

The cheaper one on ECP - 434440320 - has this Bosch number: 0 986 280 202. This number is included in a document containing Bosch parts data I have found online and there is a section relating to '1.9l 81kw AHF' with that part number listed below under 'Air mass meter, diesel'. The section also refers to '1M2' which I believe relates to the Toledo mk2.

All evidence points to the cheaper ECP part being the right one, so I'm gonna give it a bash!

You could also check the Pierburg 7.22684.07.0 originally it's off a merc but reads a little higher airflow than the Bosch unit allowing your ECU to calculate air fuel ratio beyond standard parameters and cheaper than the original if I remember correctly.

It does involve a bit more fiddling to fit, after unplugging the MAF, you have to remove two fasteners allowing the sensor to separate from the housing, withdraw the sensor and carefully install the replacement.

It's not too difficult and the only external difference is, the pierburg MAF does not have a securing clip for the plug which fits perfectly otherwise. I have not experienced any problems with the two parting company over at least 3 years.
Good luck with the house, new job but your car most of all. D

Well chaps, we have a result. Thanks again for all your help with this.

Yesterday I replaced the MAF with the new Bosch item (total cost £55.08 incl VAT after discounts from Euro Car Parts). I also did a full ECU reset, following this guide - seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=110917

After teaching the ECU about the windows, fans, lights and so on, I ever-so-gently nursed the pre-warmed car to a quiet road with a lovely long straight. I got it rolling in 1st, then buried the throttle. WHOOSH! The car launched itself to full revs in an instant. Grabbed second. POW! It surged its way through the revs again. Third. Same again. Lift off, and howl with joy. Astonishing. I did a couple more runs and it was just mesmerising. I then did a couple of runs from low revs in 5th, and again it piled on the pace exactly as you would hope it to.

I was over the moon and ended up going on a completely random drive all over the place, with a very gentle last few miles to cool everything down before switching off.

I wish I had done this a year ago!

I think my wife is in for a shock when she next drives it, as she already thought it was fast with the dodgy MAF.

I'll post some pictures up when it's clean!

I need to look at getting a new MAF... Haha does yours have an issue where it takes longer to start when it's warm? Mine turns over 4 times before actually starting when I've driven for a bit.
