got 2 seat tdi's both with VNT turbo's both needing exhaust replacements soon.

now the Toledo is running a second-hand engine with a refurbed turbo, long story from a few years back. this car had a new turbo fitted with a decat pipe from ebay, 9 miles later engine blew. now it was probably due to the idiot not emptying the intercooler after the turbo went, but I did read somewhere its not a good idea to decat vnt's as the loss in back pressure causes the turbo to over speed.

now I could just do a cat back solution I guess, what's the best way forward without spending a fortune? do standard boxes not restrict much?

That's the one. It's a bit of a DIY job. You can go to a garage to get it done (if they will), bodge a bit of straight tube from a motor factors, or head to Jetex custom exhaust parts and get a straight pipe plus reducer, tailpipe and hangers n make it that way.

...... I did read somewhere its not a good idea to decat vnt's as the loss in back pressure causes the turbo to over speed.

I wouldn't know about that but I have a Milltek turbo back and never have boost spikes over 1.5 bar, no limp mode and while the turbo spools up sooner and throttle response is better there don't seem to be any bad effects except a small puff of blue smoke on start up(because the cat isn't there to collect the oil and burn it).

I have heard lots about the turbo seals prematurely wearing due to the lack of back pressure but this seems to be backed up by nothing more than "the internet" so far? Unless someone can give me anecdotal evidence of this happening (i.e. 3 turbos blown in 30k miles as a direct result of a decat).
