Leon Cupra R lumpy cold start

Hi Folks,

My Cupra R (2010) seems to have a lumpy idle on a cold start, maybe for around 10 seconds or so. It runs fine once warm, also if its been run and off for a bit - the second startup is fine. Its just the complete cold start that is a bit ‘chuggy’ is the best way i can describe it.

I have scanned for codes with a Carly adaptor and the only code coming up is P038B Intervention Load Management (Central Electronics - not serious). This may not be related to the fault.

I know these engines aren’t the smoothest/quietest ever made but the way it struggles in the cold can’t be normal.

Thanks

Has it had a runner flap delete? Just a wild stab. That can cause rough idling from cold, but a lot of people do it.

Yes it has mate according to the paperwork by a previous owner. Just says ‘runner flap delete done due to potential failure point whilst carrying out de-coke)

Is that a necessary mod? Are they known to fail?

I have just read that apparently it can be mapped out to prevent the lumpy startup. Looking at my paperwork the runner flap delete was done in 2015 and it had APR Stage 1 done in 2017.

I’m assuming the APR would have just been a generic map and hasn’t been done custom to prevent the issue.

Looking at the APR filename on the paperwork, maybe they did try to map this out (RFD).

It's common to have the RFDs removed. Basically they are little flaps that if they break off (which they can do) get eaten up by the engine and doesn't end well. Well, APR were def aware from the receipt above, so would be surprised if they haven't mapped for it. I don't have that particular mod myself, maybe it's worse if you don't have the patch (e.g. engine stalls).

Might be worth emailing APR and seeing what they think about it. Maybe it can only be patched so much.

Thanks for the info Jon, I will fire them an email and see what they say. Its only just until i can afford all the supporting mods to get it into R-Tech for a Stage 2+ & full check over. I have been searching through the members list today to see if i could find the previous owner who did a majority of the work on here as a few of the invoices have a seatcupra.net discount code on them, so assuming he was on here but no luck so far. (not the fella i bought the car from - the owner before him).

I'm looking forward to having a thorough read through your readers ride posts - just been dribbling over your car spec at the top of the first page :ROFLMAO: What a beast!

I can't recommend R-Tech highly enough. Niki and the team did an amazing job on my car. Even down to mapping the traction control (which I didn't know you could do).

If you get bored, you can read about the individual mods I've done here:

Goes through what you need for each stage and weak points to look out for. But 2+ was worth every penny.

Update - so APR UK have got back to me after checking the map they have registered to my VIN and it should have the RFD mapped in. However, they cannot guarantee because its 3yrs since they had it that it hasn’t been messed with elsewhere which i fully understand, so they have told me to contact my local APR dealer to have it checked.

To be honest though i may just live with it until i go for Stage 2+ at R-Tech, i don’t drive the car much currently anyway. At least i know why it’s doing it now and there isn’t a fault that needs sorting out.
