Hi all, been a while since I was last here so thought I would drop by and see what people think of the Toledo mk2 110bhp and wether is is still a decent car or not. My reasoning? well in 10 months I have put almost a new car together because everything is breaking down.

Refurb Turbo
Relay fuse box fried
Fox lights blew 2nd relay fuse board
2 engine mounts,
Bearings/bushins all round
2 drives,
alternator
Clutch/flywheel

to name but a few. And now my gearbox decided to shoot some type of pin out through it leaving a hole, was told it came from the diff or something, so I went and got a 2nd hand one from the local breakers (50miles) and got my mechanic to fit it, next thing, no reverse, the gearbox was screwed, I phoned the breaker to say that I have received a faulty one and he ate me down the phone and said my mechanic was a balls and to bring the car down to him. So I did and he ended up putting another gear box in. I got the car back yesterday and boy was the gearstick tight, I mean unreal, it wouldn't even spring back into the center when knocked out of gear. But no matter I drove on thinking all was fine.

I took the car out this evening for the first time since yesterday and drove to a mates house (12 mile) and we went for a run in his car, when I came back (2 hours later) to my annoyance big pool of oil under the car again and all the way down the street. I reversed the car back about 5 foot and viola big puddle of oil under where the gearbox was again.

Sorry for the long winded story but can anyone give me an idea what to do? I start a new job next week and I need a car. My financial situation isn't good at the minute and have VERY limited funds, hence always fixing the car instead of buying a new one.

Cannot fault mine to be honest and if we werent expecting twins then I dont think I would be selling it. We have the SE model so climate and cruise which I now couldnt live without on the family car

We have had it two years and all it has needed in that time is general servicing and a few wear and tear items. It does currently have a few problems though, airbag light is on and the rear door does not lock or unlock on the remote central locking but works fine locking and unlocking from inside the car

Sorry to hear you have had trouble with yours. Ours is the 110 TDi diesel

Jesus!!! You've had some problems with that. Bit diffilcult to reccomend what to do. I've got a 1999 Toledo 110 and I've owned it for just over 3 years now. Things I had to fix on mine was 2 seized calipers, track rod end, hand brake cable and a broken front spring. Thats it in 3 years. Obviously also normal wear and tear bits as well like disks, pads, wipers and bulbs. My Tolly has got 135000miles on the clock and still going strong. One of the most reliable cars I've ever owned.

Almost sounds like your problems might be down to some other issues. Has your car ever been in an accident for instance. I think mostly everybody will tell you how good these cars are. Yours might have been in an accident or thrashed really hard. Has it been remapped?

Personally I would get rid and get a new car if its giving you that many problems. How musc is it costing to repair compared to what the car is worth?

Nowadays you can pickup some really decent cars for very little money.

Al the best mate. Hope you get something sorted.

Thanks for the replays. I really don't know what to do with it any more, I must of bought a real lemon of a car. When I bought the car it wasn't is the best knick ever on the outside but driving was what seemed a good tight car, no knocks or rattles of any kind (I would normally near a pin drop) so out of all the cars Ive had I thought this wasn't a bad one. Boy was I wrong. Its not remapped, totally standard, no mods at all done to it. Not much service history with it but because it seemed to be running properly I took a risk.

When I got it home I got it serviced, I also got new timing belt and all on even though they said it was changed 10k miles ago. (most people are straight enough but for some reason if a car has no history then I do this on all my cars) It gets decent oil, This is was Quantum or something, wasn't cheap anyhow. All genuine parts was installed.

Anyhow... Took a look this morning after setting some cardboard under her all night and only a small amount of oil leaked. It seemed as it its coming from a little hatch at the bottom right of the gearbox. Possibly a small access point into the gearbox when empty? I dont know. but the seal seems to be gone. So im gonna try that and see how I get on.

I do genuinely like the car, but unfortunately because of this one I dont think I could go back to VAG again. Ive really lost all heart in the car. I would change but when I say financial problems its really does mean just that. I can barely afford the repairs as it is. :s

Some pics I took while my TDI 110 Toledo was up on axle-stands.

Gearbox from the front, showing the filling point. I think the plate with the VW logo on it covers the bottom end of the gearshift mechanism. It's the only plate I know of on the bottom of the gearbox.

Differential from the front, showing the gearbox drain plug.

Do either of these show where you think your leak is coming from?

Yes the one with the VW stamp on it, thats the one that seems to be leaking. I got some high temp sealant there and some new gear oil. Gonna try and seal it up for now with that. Is there a proper seal available for it? I went to the local parts shop and they cant seem to find one.

hmm.. upon unscrewing the plate a little I tried to prise the plate down abit, I thought I herd the gear selector drop, so I unscrewed a little more and herd it again. Am I going to get any nasty suppress If I take this plate off completely? or springs or anything going to pop out? I tried searching the net but not able to find much.

From the diagrams I can find, the plate holds the bottom end of the selection rod in a sleeve. Gearbox disassembly is shown with the gearbox on a stand, bellhousing down. I don't know if the selector shaft will drop out or get misaligned. All the oil will come out first, of course. There doesn't seem to be a seal,

Can you find a reason for the leak - is the plate cracked or bent?
