Melted Fuse

Hi all,
Just noticed today that one of the blade fuses on top of my battery has melted. The plastic around fuse has melted but the fuse hasn't blown. It is the fuse closest to the engine (on left as you look at car from the front).

Could anybody tell me why this might have melted?

Does anydody know what this fuse is for, taking it out does not seem to have affected the car

What size fuse should this be, the one I took out was 30Amp.

Cheers All

Brother inlaw had this on his VW Golf 2001 Y, was the starter motor iirc. tightening and loose connections causing the cabling to get really effing hot and melting the fuse.
If I can find out any more will let you know.

cheers for the reply, it was the fan fuse. I did a search and found the answer. ended up replacing the fuse panel (£40) and the fan started working again.
It also seems to have sorted out the intermitent problem I was having with the TCS and ABS lights coming on, which i think was related to the middle fuse on top of the batery.
Thanks again, Tom
