mpg on a tdi

Don't seem to be getting very good fuel economy on the Mk2 Leon 140bhp.
Should I be getting more than 42mph driving very conservatively? Done just over 2500 miles since new.
I hear people mention they get nearly 50mpg on this engine, is there something wrong with my vehicle?
Engine does seem quite noisy, could this be why?

Very impressed with how well it goes when you do give it some welly though

Maybe as the mileage increases the mpg gets better then, very disapointed to only get around 450 miles on a tank.

Maybe the way I'm driving it but I'm only getting around 400 per tank in my TDi FR ..... hopefully will improve though, only on 2000 miles...

I’m only getting about 41mpg at the moment but this is down to my driving style and only doing mainly short trips. I have had the reading up to 50 mpg before but that’s when u granny the car and don’t use it like it suppose to be used.

i own a reference sport 140bhp with around 3300 miles on the clock and i only get about 40-41 mpg. i mostly drive a short journey to and from work every day which rarely see's me going over 40mph so that'll explain the mpg.

i have managed to get 55mpg with motorway driving though, and driving like a granny on one occasion (yes i resisted temptation to go above 1500revs, although it was hard) to gain the best mpg, i managed the same.

I think if driven normally (a wee bit of hard acceleration now and then) after several thousand miles, you could expect 42-45mpg on an average journey.

Not the only one

Just been hunting around the net to see if I was the only one getting poor mpg on a new Leon. Mine is about a month old, and has done just over 2000 miles.
Its a new Stylance 2.0ltr 140bhp and I am lucky to get 42 mpg. If i drive like miss daisy I can get 47 but it takes some doing.

A bit annoyed about this as the dealer assured me it would do 50+ and my old Golf would easily do 50.

Please tell me it gets better.

I have had my car since they were released in the Uk so 14 months now and it does not get better. Well at least with my driving. If my girlfriend drives it she always gets 10 mpg more than me. I think this is down to her being a little less heavy with the right foot.

Just drive the car and don’t worry about the mpg!!

I have the same engine in my Altea and can only get above 40 mpg on a run, and then only up to 42-44. I do have DSG and drive it hard most of the time though.
It is remapped and goes very well indeed, so ,like the previous poster, I would say just enjoy driving it.

I am up to 12k and my car is now noticably more efficient than it was when I got it. Used to struggle to get low 40s but now frequently get high 40s and up to mid 50s if I drive motorways at a steady 70.

Mine 140tdi Sport is approaching 40k miles. The trip computer normally reads about 45mpg with a good mix of town and motorway.

On a recent 150miles trip to the airport, air con off and cruising at 65mph on pretty empty roads it showed 60mpg!

So I would say it more boils down to how heavy the right foot is...

My 2L TDi sport has got 3.5k on the clock now and recently I've been checking the mpg, checking how much it takes to fill up since last time and how many miles it's done on that etc. I've been getting on average 47 mpg.

But saying that 70% of my driving is long motorway trips where I stick on the cruise control and just let it go, and 30% is out of hours town driving in the center of london, so a fair bit of traffic but not too mad.

I thought I was worried!!!

Proud owner of a Leon FR TDi.

I contacted my dealership and asked why I was only getting 42mpg on a single trip to work (12 miles M66 motorway and 5 city roads). The 5 takes longer than the 12, typical Manchester.

This was asked a few weeks back but since I clocked up 7k the engine seems to have loosened a fair bit (after some gentle pursuation, hmmm, flooring it onto Mway slip road ). The result, mpg has shot up to just shy off the manufacturers combined of 47.1 to 46 and that's with careful city driving and carefulish (got to love that 3rd gear though) motorway drives.

I always get told that you won't see the fuel economy optimising until after 10k on the clock. Have to say, if I'm getting these averages now what will I get in a couple of months?

...still loving that 3rd gear acceleration....bring on the torque!!!!

Overall result is that on £46 of Shell Extra Diesel I'm getting 510 - 530 miles from a full tank. Yes, I do have an FR!!! RESULT!!!

You are only really going to get +50mpg with a 1.9 TDi I get 55mpg easily on motorway, with a heavy foot too

We've just got rid of our reference sport 140bhp and that did roughly 450miles to a tank and that had 9000 on the clock..its was mostly motorway miles seems about rite..Our mk1 FR tdi is much better on fuel
