New to SEAT.......

We have just replaced our elderly SAAB 9-5 estate (189k on the clock and too many advisories on last MOT) with a 2015 Ibiza FR Black 1.2 TSi as it will be my other half's daily drive, Bought from a SEAT dealer with one lady owner, 22k on the clock. Service book only shows oil change/inspection services. The wheels had been changed to 16" as the first owner found the ride too hard - and the dealer insisted they were 16" rims off another Ibiza but all I can find on the internet is pictures of a Toledo with this pattern rim (Style).

So now my distrust of car dealers is getting worse and I have a look under the bonnet. Expansion tank which is clearly marked G13 (latest spec coolant since 2008) but the coolant is an orange/pink colour. My daughter has just had anew Arona and the coolant in that is a pale violet colour. She looked at the coolant in our car and said it was the same colour as in her old 2002 Cordoba! (I am good with colour as I spent 5 years at art school and worked in Graphic design for many years).

So why would the coolant have been replaced with the incorrect specification coolant?

I also find the owners manual the worst one I have ever seen - lots of pages on how to put your seat belt on but no useful information on capacities, tyre pressure and sizes.

I had the full official workshop manual and electronic parts catalogue for the SAAB downloaded onto my computer but can find very little for the SEAT.

Can't even find a copy of a proper maintenance schedule for the car!

I assume this is part of the Volkswagen master plan to make people only have their cars serviced by dealers at top price.

One thing to point out is, that PDF document was sourced from Erwin which is an on line resource for all VW Group products and aimed at non VW Group workshops and DIYers, you need to register to use it and then you pay per hour to view or download documents.
I have reg'd with Erwin, for UK residents the location/postal address bit can be a bit messy, but I and many others have worked out how to fill that bit in, but I've forgotten exactly how! My plan was badly flawed and I tried to print off lots of wiring diagrams - and failed dramatically, so a few years later I have not returned to Erwin, like anything else new, once you have spent the first time educating yourself on how to use it, then it should become easy, or you just download absolutely everything that you need, it is kept up to date and should hold records of all TPIs relevant to your specific car.
For my 2011 Audi S4, I wimped out and just bought a copy of the entire documentation that someone else had down loaded from a similar source, I might try the VW area for my wife's 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS as each marque has its own area within Erwin and from my experience, they have all been complied by different groups of people, so navigating one does not seem to make life any easier when navigating another, typical I support, no standard not even within VW Group!

At that highish or average SAAB mileage, if it had a petrol engine, had you suffered the usual fuel pump failure?

It was a diesel - 2.2 Tid, a Vauxhall engine which was having cold start problems plus expensive to repair body corrosion, we had done 100k of those miies on an original clutch so it was uneconomic to repair. We sold it for spares. Can recommend Saab Tech Talk forum however.

Re rims. Toledo's and Ibiza's of that age use the same diameter, width, and offset so they are to all intents the same. I bet someone was very happy to pickup a set of Black Tagus 17s off your car cheap.

I'm not sure where these 2.2Tid engines originally came from - Isuzu certainly the GM used 1.9TDI came from that source and caused a lot of troubles in VX cars as well as SAABs.

I'm not sure where these 2.2Tid engines originally came from - Isuzu certainly the GM used 1.9TDI came from that source and caused a lot of troubles in VX cars as well as SAABs.
2.2 are gm engines, 1.9 are fiat engines

Vauxhall have a habit of taking decent engine designs and adding and removing features to give them the GM touch which usually results in cost saving which ultimately results in reliability issues.

The 2.2 TiD was called an ecotec engine and I am sure it was a GM design. I have a 2.0 litre version of the same engine in the Astra G that I use for my work but it doesn't have an intercooler. This engine is tough a sold boots and the reckon that taxi drivers running Omega's, Carltons etc. get 300k miles + out of them. Neither the SAAB or my Astra had rattly timing chains or used a drop of oil! The 1.9 Tdi i bleive was a FIAT design and uses a cambelt which needs replacing every 70k along with the water pump. Much quieter and smoother but not so reliable. the other problem with the SAAB under GM was build quality as the cost accountants were always looking for ways to make more profit! I would recommend Saab Tech Talk forum to your friend, lots of knowledge and helpful members.

I think if you check Citroen's history, they like SAAB tended to run themselves out of money chasing engineering individuality/superiority, shame neither company did not have the cash to continue chasing their ideals.

I suppose GM was right in holding onto all the SAAB technical information as their own intellectual property, to save it being used by anyone in the future, but doing that drove SAAB out of that game and now they are a China owned EV manufacturer - which is a pity for all SAAB enthusiasts.

Maybe it was the 2.0 engine that was an Isuzu if it was not the 1.9.

Had a few days away in Dorset for my birthday so decided to take the Ibiza to see if any problems manifested themselves. Well, she surpassed our expectations, did over 300 miles, mix of a little bit of M5 from Tiverton to Cullompton, A35 to Dorset and country lanes and still got half a tank of petrol left. Used no oil, 'google' tells me that the light tapping on cold start is the hydraulic tappets getting up to pressure. The ride has softened, possibly because the original lady owner didn't drive as hard as I do, handles very well, seats are comfortable, accelerates like s**t off a shovel now I have got used to dropping down the gears instead of relying on diesel torque! reasonably sized boot and much easier to park. Sat Nav is crap! Have tried downloading info from Erwin but all I have found is a bit like a child's guide to the motorcar in pictures which is no use at all! SWMBO has gone off to work in it quite happily

One thing I will say, if you have fallen out with Erwin, and I did after I messed up on the SEAT section, maybe like I have done, you could order up a manual - same source as Erwin, from "easymanuals.co.uk" - the one for the Audi S4 seems okay and so I have ordered one for my wife's August 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL, it should arrive later this week. Doing that is a bit of a cop out I know, but life is too short to get confused by Erwin.
The Audi S4 manual is on a DVD in PDF form, which suits me well enough, I've ordered the same format for the Polo one.

Edit:- I keep trying to interest my wife in visiting the West Country area again, too many years since we have been down!

Travelling down from Scotland we would need to spend a week or more, maybe starting in Dorset and taking in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset plus somewhere else on the way home, probably the Lakes!

We are hoping to get to Scotland next year as we haven't been up to see family (my mother was one of 9 children born in a shepherds cottage on the Cape side) for a few years. I have family from Edinburgh to the Orkneys. Were thinking about hiring a camper as my cousin has a business called Tartan Tourers in Forres. We used to stop at the Moorcock Inn near Settle but last time it had really gone down hill.
