Hi all,

Just joined the forum since selling on my Toyota Starlet Glanza V and new to Seat and the Leon, so please bear with me :)

I have just purchased a 2001 Leon Cupra which has unfortunately developed a fault, only 3 days from purchasing it :(

While driving over a speed bump at a low speed I heard a loud clunk come from the passenger side front, now on full lock to left it clunks nearly every time.

It's only happened tonight and while driving for about 5 miles since I have not detected anything in normal driving, everything appears as it should underneath

I'm hoping that this fault will be covered under my 3 Star AA warranty. I use a very good local friend / mechanic, but don't want to have to pay for the repair if it can be avoided.

I'm I looking at a fault with the ARB or a CV Joint going? There also appears to be some movement from the top mounts in the engine bay when I turn the wheel as well. I need to investigate more really, but it's now late and too dark to have a good look.

Thanks for any help / tips in advance.

Kev

are your springs ok?, maybe a cracked or broken one?
jack one side up and push on wheel all way round, try and see if theres play anywhere in the strut etc

Mine used to clunk because of very badly worn top mounts. But would only do it on full lock or going from forward to reverse and vice versa

Thanks,

If say it was the top mounts being worn out, would you think they would be covered in the warranty?

Below is what it states for suspension and front wheel drive

For steering and suspension, it states the following:

" Steering rack and pinion, power steering rack, steering box, power steering box and idler box and coil springs, (Excluding: gaitors, oil leaks, tracking and balancing)."

For Front Wheel Drive

" Drive Shafts, universal joints and couplings, constant velocity joints (Excluding gaiters and bushes)"

I know the mechanic I use locally will do a good job. but if it's covered under the warranty then I'd rather not have to pay out for the repairs.

Thanks
Kev

no harm in going to the garage and asking if you have the warranty. i would kick up a bit of a fuss and see what they say as its only happened within 3 days.

I've got the AA 3 Star Warranty with it, so I wouldn't be dealing with the garage direct that I purchased it from.

If for example it's a cracked or damaged spring, I'll take the opportunity to upgrade the suspension rather then putting an OEM replacement on.

I'm going to take it today and try and determine exactly what it is.

After further inspection, the spring appears to be fine from what I can see of it being jacked up.

I would post up images here, but I can't hyperlink them until I've made 15 posts

Basically it seems the cv gaiter on the passenger side has some grease round it and looks a bit perished and out of shape as compared to the drivers side.

The top mounts have a fair amount of movement in them when you take the steering from full lock to opposite lock and the drivers side sits higher then the passenger side.

Also from opposite lock to full lock, it clunks just as you reach full lock and then sometimes when going back to opposite it lock it clunks as you just start to go the other way.

If you could copy and paste these links, you can see what I mean.

The clunk is something to do with the top mounts which can wear. The one in the pics with the gap looks correct to me. The gaitor on the drive shaft is split if its leaking like that and its an MOT failure as its deemed dangerous. It was probably sold to you like that (maybe not knowingly so though) although you could damage a gaitor the moment you drive away which is what they'll probably suggest!

Take it back to the dealer. All traders are obliged by law to provide a 3 month warranty and if you get no joy don't mess around - just go to trading standards.
