No power steering

Hi all, need some advice please.

My car (2010 1.4 sport) had a flat battery so jumped it with a jump pack.
when i went to pull away i noticed the steering was really heavy.
The steering did this awhile ago but fixed itself when i turned it off and left it for 2 mins.

I drove it for 5 miles then plugged it into a battery charger and gave it a big charge.
This didnt help at all.

So next i popped along to halfrauds and got a new battery (tried 2) and with the new battery on it made no difference and i still had heavy steering and the warning light on the dash.

Check the fuses under the steering wheel and all ok, checked the ones in the engine bay and all ok.

The pump is a an electro-hydraulic one and there is fluid in there.

I got the AA chap to plug his diagnostic in and he said there seems to be a few errors but his machine couldnt read them. He put a tool on the negative battery cable and said that its not accepting as much as it should do too?
A multi meter shows its got 12.4V jumping to 14.4v when running so seemed ok to me?

Any ideas on what else i can check. Could this be an ECU issue? seems odd for it to happen after the battery was dead.

thanks

Would the alternator stop a new battery from having the power to activate the EPS?

power steering pump is gone... i've read many cases of them going when using a bad battery or a battery in the end of its life. seems to be related.

my suspect is that has something to do with trying to start the car mny times in a row, the pump takes a lot of energy to start, so when starting multiple times maybe something overheats or overchages the basically the pump is gone...

It happen to me 2 years ago, I was with problem in my starter and while testing the starter and starting the car many times in a row it burned the steering pump

good luck, but that's what looks to me. 14,4v seems fine so the alternator appears to working.

first thing check the errors with vcds and if you can report here to check if they are the same I had, I bet they are...

pfff

what a coincidence, just another case...
my brother left the headlights on his peugeot 307, and the battery discharged, now after charging the battery he doesnt have power steering.
the battery is OK now but the power steering doesnt work

After having a google this seems like a very common problem with VAG cars. It comes from jumping the car with a flat battery. If you connect the jump leads to the + and - on the battery this can happen, you should connect only the + terminals together, earth by connecting the engine blocks, unless you have start stop then it's different again!!

As dm222 said, get it scaned with VCDS and get all the errors, while your waiting if you want overnight, disconnect the battery and fully charge it. Then check in the morning and see if the errors have cleared and the ECU resets itself.

One chap had to take it to the garage as he did this and it forgot all his key fobs and his tyre pressure system broke, had to have all the sensors re-reconfigured.

If you connect +/+ -/-
Instead of +/+ chassi/chassi
Would that cause damage?

It could but very unlikely as the chassis is ground and the battery is referenced to it. They suggest it to prevent you accidentally igniting gases and causing voltage spikes.

When connecting the two you should do the positive first, again this is to reduce voltage spikes which can damage electronic and blow fuses.

thanks for your answer propane94, what do you mean that could cause damage in your first post then?
