Hi peeps,

Got an odd one here regarding oil change...

I've changed the oil a few times so far now, and luckily I didn't overfill the first time I did it. That's also when I discovered that I need to fill in an entire liter less than the block capacity! So if I've understood correctly, EA888 Gen3 2.0 TSI engines have an oil fill capacity of 5.7L, but everytime I change the oil I end up filling just 4.7L! Fair enough that you get more out using an extractor, but it can't be one whole liter off if you do it conventionally! (and yes I wait until it drips slowly).

Appreciate any help, it has remained a mystery to me so far. I look forward to your response :D

Are you sure the fill is 5.7l

for a 2.0l 4cyl 4.7l sounds correct.

Legit sources. All specify around 5.7L. Also the HumbleMechanic (certified VW master technician) on YouTube has a video on that for his MK7 R and he also specifies the amount as 6 quarts (5.7L)

This is from the Maintenance Manual:

Is 4.7l what you get in initially or including, after running the engine and topping up again?

There will always be some oil ‘hang-up’ in the engine, oil cooler etc.

Have you removed the oil filter before or after draining the oil? The filter housing will hold some oil so if u change the filter after draining/changing the oil this will just go down into the sump.
Mine took roughly 5.5L when I serviced it last.

Legit sources so why are you asking on here if you’ve already made your mind up on what’s right. Just fill your oil up and check it the level on a dip stick like the rest of us that’s the best way to make sure you’ve put in enough oil and not over filled it. It’s as easy as that no need to start off a discussion if your just gonna argue what’s right and wrong.

The 2.0 TDI CR does have a capacity of 4.7 litres though!

The capacity is larger on the petrol engine, as it generates more heat so needs some additional oil to go through the larger capacity cooler on the higher output engines. Diesel fuel also has some lubrication properties too.

Not trying to prove anyone wrong, rather trying to understand why I fill a whole liter less. Otherwise obviously dip stick is what counts, but if you're carrying out an oil service for the first time like I did, I don't think you'll check your dip stick after every slight pour but rather fill close to specification and then check when you're close. I got lucky that I did check it somewhere around 4.5L.

Drain oil, replace plug, replace filter, fill oil, idle for a few minutes. Still doesn't justify 1 liter... Thanks for the answer anyway :)

It even says 5.7 in the manual. I get in 4.7 after draining, installing a new filter then filling. I have never needed to top up after the engine had run after the oil change.
