That's interesting as my last 1.4 engine in a facelifted MK3 used to have quite the drinking problem, but the next two MK4's with 1.5 engines shared the same 1L top up bottle between them.
That oil is not "approved" to the VW 508 specification.
Their technical data sheet just says performance level 508.
I would only use an oil which says "approved" to 508.
You can find lists for VW approved oils suppliers, which have been approved as 508 specification.
For example from Mobil - they say 'approved' It would be illegal for them to say this if it wasn't approved and matching the VW spec.
There was a court case on the naming convention of engine oils - the outcome was basically oil suppliers can only use 'approved' if it is actually approved by the OEM.
Equivalent to, Matches, Equals, Same Performance etc... are just marketing terms.
