Pela oil extractor pump

Hi,

Anybody successfully used a suction oil extraction pump on their mk3?

I had a quick trial run today and I wasn't getting any oil out. The end of the hose wasn't reaching the sump. It was hitting something solid but it wasn't the bottom of the sump.

It has worked fine on previous PD and CR diesels.

I also see the oil filter has been moved to under the engine. Looks like I'm back to messing about with ramps and undertrays for an oil change. :(

Any feedback much appreciated.

Col.

Used one recently to take a bit of oil out as I topped up too much. 184 TDi.
Had to force the hose down very slightly but worked fine.
For a full oil change I think its best to drain from the sump with a filter change. Gets all of the sediment out.

I had my last car for 9 years and always serviced it using a Pela Pump. Never had any problems.

I tried it with my mk3 1.4tsi SE and only got 2.8 litres out. When I investigated, I discovered that bottom of the sump was at two levels with the the rear part lower than the front, where the dipstick lands.

This time I had it serviced by my local Seat dealer. I notice that the Seat maintenance list says
" Engine oil: Drain or extract; renew oil filter".

I think that if you change modern synthetic oils at the correct service intervals there is minimal risk of sludge.

Used my Pela (6000) to extract the oil from my Leon (1.4TSi~150ps) and didn't have any problems. 4+ litres removed.

My Pela has the 5mm OD tube. There is a restriction in the sump but once the extractor tube bottoms out, pull it back a couple of mm's and rotate it and gently push it back down, worked for me.

The filter is another matter! Undertray has to come off imo, couldn't find any way to do it topside. HTH

Thanks for the info Dr.Dash. I have the same Pela pump. I have just tried inserting the 5mm tube. The most I can insert is 57cm of tube from the top of the dipstick tube. I tried with a more flexible 5mm tube. It stopped at 57cm, but I was able to manipulate it past that point. No idea where it went though.

Taking rough external measurements 57mm seems to equate to the distance from the top of the dipstick tube to the bottom of the sump at the front.

When I reach down past the drive belts, place my fingers on the bottom of the sump then move them toward the back of the sump I can feel a distinct transition to a lower level. If you have the same sump, is it possible that you diverted the tube to the lower level when you manipulated it?

Further to my last post, a workmate has given me an illustration of the Sump and Oil Pump Assembly for a 1.4 TSI (125ps) from an Elsawin Manual. This shows clearly that the rear part of the sump containing the sump plug, oil level sender and oil temperature sensor is lower than the front part.

I don't rate my chances of using my Pela pump with this engine.

I use my Pela pump for the interim oil changes ( 5k miles ) on my 184TDI without any issues at all. Sucks out 99% of the sump oil, about 4.5l last time.

Its a lot easier than getting under the car and taking of the undertray etc. to use the sump plug. I save that job for main oil change ( 10k miles ) when I also change the filter which is a pain to get to on the 184TDI

absolute madness....

oil capacity is what 4.5 litres? what an absolute waste of money changing 3.5 litres and leaving 1 litre of dirty potentially swarf filled oil in the car...

had another go today - I've now struck oil :D

just needed to turn it and waggle it about a bit. I'll report back how much oil I get out when I complete the job.

got only 3.2l out in the end. Looks like it's back to faffing about with ramps and undertrays for oil changes on this car. Thanks vw!

Not madness at all. Oil changed at every 5k mile by sucking 99% out and then at every 10k its done via sump plug.

Far better than every 10k via sump plug or even worse every 20k.

Maybe my maths works differently to yours but 3.5l of 4.5l is 77% not 99%, so just over 2 thirds..
so congratulations! you are changing 2/3rds of your oil and mixing it with 1/3rd dirty oil, and that of course is utterly sane and not at all a waste of time.

If you are happy with that then good for you!

If you read my post correctly I edited it for 4.5L as I could not remember exactly how much the pump extracted. I checked my records when I got home.

Also, mixing old a new oil is still better than 100% old oil which anyone with some basic knowledge of oils would appreciate.

Maybe you should educate yourself on how oils work.

Interesting, so you managed to removed the entire 4.5l capacity with the pump, yet you didn't remove the oil filter which holds 0.5l....

I generally work on the basis of taking all the old oil out (by removing the sump plug, which also gives me to opportunity to clean any swarf from the magnetic plug... and removing the oil filter) and putting new oil in, but I appreciate that in your head its much better to mix old and new oil together and ignore the oil filter.

Again, read my posts correctly. I use the oil extractor pump for a 5k oil change and then at 10k I drain via sump plug and fit a new filter.

Ive got no idea why you are insisting I read your posts again, as you change and edit them like the wind I would have to spend so much time doing it that I don't think I would see a benefit to my knowledge....
