Plastic/Metal impeller water pumps.

Does anyone know whether VW makes a metal impeller water pump. I am in the middle of a timing belt change on my TDI Golf anf they advised me to wait till now to avoid the surcharge £40 on the pump. So I went down to the dealer yesterday and the parts guy says 'they don't make a metal impeller pump, they have talked about it but haven't done it yet.' So I took the Plasitc one but thought i would check the info before fitting, Euro carparts seem to do a metal one but I am kind of committed to the dealer now. Anyone know and if so what part number I would be looking for for a AJM engine code (2000 Gt TDI 115 BHP).
Thanks:)

From what I know anything manufactured after 2004 is metal impeller. I did mine recently and definitely got a metal impellered pump and the surcharge was £25 not £40. From local vw too as I have a leon tdi cupra.

My dealer said the same as well....He said they've never made a metal one but you can get a metal impeller pump from external sources such as eurocarparts....however he did say that the plastic pump is apparantely stronger than it used too be it's now "a reinforced plastic" i think he said....

I stuck with the original equipment pump as well....

By the way not sure if it's nationwide but my local VW dealer has an offer on all servicing parts including cambelt kits at the moment....think it was somwhere in the region of 20% off....i'll look at my bill later

Hi Cadge, Thanks for the info, mine is done now and I just resigned myself to changing it again next time. Once the belt is off it's oly 3 bolts so it's easy enough and you do get the benefit of dealer warranty on their parts. Incidentaly my old pump was fine, I think the problems tend to start at more like 80-100k and you are better changing it when the belt is off at 60k rather than have to take it off again at 8ok, never mind the overheating risk. What engine do you have and are you planning to do the job yourself?

I've got the PD150 in the leon cupra....No I'll do most things myself....but have never done a cambelt myself and with no guides around I didnt want to run the risk of trying it myself..... A local garage is doing the cambelt and pump for 100 notes....What coolant did you use??

We sell metal impeller ones at work (GSF), but they have to be asked for. We don't charge surcharges on them either, in fact I've never heard of it before!

On the subject of coolant, VW G12 spec has to be used, if its not you'll find yourself with a knackered cooling system.

You might as well do it on the 60k cambelt change as the cambelt has to come off to change the water pump and the pump is only about £25...I'll have a look at my receipt later.

As mentioned above Seat/VW have never made a metal impellor pump but you can get them from other motor factors such as GSF. I stuck with the original pump from the dealers myself...

Yep G12's the stuff, how much you need depends on how much you lose doing the job. By rights that shouldn't be much but I used a full litre and a half bottle and then a bit more, I was doing so well catching it and then whoosh:cry:, ah well!
By the way £100 to do the job is a steal, rip their arm off would be my now learned opinion. Guides are availble for the MK4 Golf (www.tdiclub.com is a good source) but not sure how much different yours would be I suspect not much, problem I had was I have a pre 2004 one which has a hydraulic tensioner and the guide came for a manual tensioner so I had to get a separate guide for my tensioner and swap about:headhurt:.
Hope it all goes well[B)].

If you call your local GSF and give them the reg they'll do all the hard work for you :)

Our cambelt kits are a lot less than the dealers too, same parts as OE too.

I had mine replaced when my cambelt was changed at 120k, and the new one went within about 15k miles. The plastic impeller lost grip on the shaft and just span freely, causing it to overheat under full load.

I bought mine from these people: http://www.water-pumps.org/
